Program Overview


Intelligent Systems Engineering (ISE) is the future of engineering. This program creates the “SMART” engineer through an interdisciplinary program that combines Artificial Intelligence, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Design, and the Internet of Things.

The ISE program will train the next generation of engineers that create intelligent devices and systems that sense and react to the environment in novel and smart ways. While engineering, in general, is all about problem-solving, ISE offers next-level solutions by leveraging advanced computing, pattern recognition, machine learning, and other forms of artificial intelligence.

ISE-generated solutions can take many forms, from autonomous vehicles, smart appliances, rockets, hypersonic jet engines, smart networking devices, cybersecurity devices, Medical Internet of Things, robotics, and more. 

By the time students graduate with a Bachelor of Science in ISE, they will have demonstrated fundamental knowledge in:

  • Data structures & Algorithms
  • Hardware and Software Programming
  • Embedded and IoT systems
  • Pattern recognition, Machine learning, and Artificial intelligence
  • Physics & Advanced Math
  • Robotics
  • Cyber Physical Systems and Cybersecurity

A degree in Intelligent Systems Engineering prepares you for:

The ISE program focuses on training the students to acquire a rare combination of technical skills required for taking on the open challenges in the modern smart systems applications. Students completing the Bachelor of Science in Intelligent Systems Engineering will demonstrate an ability to:

  • use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice
  • apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and different engineering disciplines
  • design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data
  • design a system or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints
  • function on multidisciplinary teams
  • identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems
  • maintain professional and ethical responsibility

Dr. Laavanya portraitLaavanya Rachakonda, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Science, University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW)

Laavanya Rachakonda conducts research on the edge domain using artificial intelligence, deep learning approaches, and application-specific architectures for consumer electronic systems based on the IoT and the IoMT focused on smart healthcare applications in areas like elderly health, human stress detection, and post-traumatic stress disorders. Her research extends to various Internet of Things domains like Smart Cities, Smart Vehicles, Smart Transportation, etc.

Dr. Alamleh portraitHosam Alamleh, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Science, University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW)

Hosam Alamleh conducts research on wireless networks, radiofrequency and location technology and howto implement these Technolgies efficiently and securely in intelligent systems. His employment experience included consulting and optimizing the radio frequency systems in different wireless communication companies. Furthermore, he worked for a location technology and navigation companies.

Dr. Saeidi portraitHamed Saeidi, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Science, University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW)

Hamed Saeidi conducts research on autonomous and human-centered control of robotic systems to develop the next generation of smarter and safer robots. Before joining UNCW, he was an Assistant Research Scientist at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Johns Hopkins University.

Dr. Karl Ricanek has 30 years of AI/ML, Biometrics, and Computer Vision development. He has developed solutions for the U.S. Government, industry, and multiple start-ups. Dr. Ricanek is a passionate advocate for the ethical use of AI and building the AI Economy through entrepreneurship. He is a well-regarded international researcher who speaks and lectures around the world.

How Do I Become a Intelligent Systems Engineering Major?

First, you need to apply to UNCW and enroll. Second, contact the program coordinator, Dr. Karl Ricanek, at ise-info@uncw.edu to let him know your interest. Students will immediately begin taking courses in ISE during the first semester at UNCW. You must contact the coordinator and make your interest in the program known.
