Resident Student Move-Out Information

Dear Resident Students:

Based on guidance from the UNC System, UNCW is requiring all students to return to, or remain at, their permanent residences. This means that resident students who have already returned to campus must depart, and those who have not yet returned may do so to retrieve belongings. Below is detailed guidance on the move-out and exception process.

Move-Out Timeline
Move out will start at 12 p.m. on March 18th and end at 5 p.m. on March 22nd. Move-out times will be scheduled during the hours of 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.  Students must sign up for an arrival time so we can limit the number of individuals in close contact and maximize available parking.

Access for residents (without approved exceptions) will end at 5:00 p.m. on March 22nd and rooms will be locked. Should you be unable to remove your belongings before that time, the university will designate a time after March 22nd when you may return to retrieve belongings, but please understand that this window may occur a month or more after March 22nd as no one can predict the course the pandemic will take in the weeks to come. After March 22nd, your room will remain locked until we can schedule your return.

You will receive an email from your RC before 10 a.m. tomorrow regarding how to sign up for an arrival time to move out.  We appreciate your understanding as we navigate these unique and fast-moving times.

Move-Out Process
Residents should observe the following process for move out:

  1. Sign up for an arrival time to move out.
  2. Arrive to campus during your designated arrival time.
  3. Move your belongings out of your room. In the interest of urgency, remove your belongings quickly including all trash, but you can forgo cleaning.
  4. Drop your key off at the front desk and sign the key card.
  5. Depart for home.

After you depart, housing staff will inspect your room to ensure there are no major damages that need to be charged. If there are damages, we will notify you of the charge at a later date. To assist with the move-out process, we will have move-out bins in each area and a limited supply of boxes / bags.

Move-Out Exceptions:
Exceptions to the directive to depart campus/remain off campus will be made for extraordinary cases.  This will include students who may not have safe and suitable alternative living arrangements or who have prohibitive travel restrictions. Additional examples of extraordinary student circumstances may include:

  • Lack of other available housing options
  • Inability to travel to, or return from, permanent residence due to travel restrictions
  • Unsafe domestic situation at permanent residence
  • Inability to return home or pay for off-campus housing
  • Presence required for in-person instruction that has been deemed essential.

Students requesting an exception must email the university with their request via Housing@uncw.edu before 10 a.m. on March 20.  Please include your name, campus address, and cell phone number. Please explain in detail the circumstances you believe require you to remain on campus. A team of University staff will review your request and respond with a decision within 24 hours. The State of North Carolina has advised that all students petitioning for an exception must undergo a health screening; if students are granted an exception, a staff member from the Student Health Center will contact you regarding the scheduling of a health screening. Please note that if your exception is approved, you will likely be moved from your current housing location, as housing operations will be consolidated at an appropriate time. If moved to a new location, students granted exceptions must remove all belongings from their current housing location.

At this time we do not have guidance on a timeline for a return to normal operations, so we encourage residents to move out all belongings. In addition, students remaining on campus may be consolidated into locations where other students were living before spring break. For these reasons, all resident students are strongly encouraged to retrieve all personal belongings from their current housing locations.

The next email you should expect to receive will be from your Residence Coordinator with instructions for how to sign up for an arrival time to move out.

We ask that you please travel safely, follow social distancing protocols and return safely to the nest when we are all given permission to do so. We Seahawks were stronger than Hurricane Florence, and we will beat COVID-19 as a community as well.
