Cultural enrichment and study abroad opportunities

Honors offers exclusive study abroad opportunities, where cohorts of Honors students travel abroad with faculty. Usually, students spend a semester learning about a topic or place as part of an interdisciplinary seminar; then, the class travels together.

In the past few years, Honors study abroad trips have included locations like London, Peru, Spain, Denmark, Iceland and more. Check out this video from the London trip, above, filmed and edited by student Sam Shores.

We explore domestically, too. A typical year will find us taking a bus to Washington, D.C. over fall break to explore the nation's capital, and then to the mountains surrounding Asheville, NC for spring break to relax, recharge, and explore the culturally rich city and surrounding towns.

Honors Scholars are encouraged to participate in cultural events at UNCW and in the Wilmington community. As an Honors student, you will have access to free tickets for cultural events on campus and in the Wilmington area--anything from concerts to dance festivals to improv troupes. We also encourage volunteerism and try to put together several opportunities every semester where Honors students can volunteer together.

Here are some tickets we've purchased and excursions we've put together in the past year or two:

  • David Sedaris (author)
  • The Second City (comedy)
  • Ailey II (dance)
  • Ballet Folclórico Nacional de México de Silvia Lozano (dance)
  • UNCW Theatre productions
  • Jazzmeia Horn (music)
  • Cameron Art Museum
  • Fort Fisher Aquarium
  • Habitat for Humanity (volunteering)

It's your story. We can't wait to help you write it.
