All graduate students are eligible to apply for travel grants.

These grants are designed to reward excellence in scholarship and to increase the visibility of the University of North Carolina Wilmington’s graduate programs within the academic community. Please review the information below for information on how to apply.

Graduate Student Association (GSA) Travel Grants

The Graduate Student Association provides graduate students with travel grants to attend professional conferences, workshops, or to complete thesis research. Funds are limited and all guidelines are strictly enforced.

Grant Conditions and Application Requirements:

  • The GSA Travel Grant award is up to $350.
  • Please note that you must attend at least one GSA meeting during the academic year prior to applying to receive a GSA travel grant. Attendance to a meeting can be either face-to-face or online via WebEx. All GSA meeting emails via Nancy Holland contain login information for WebEx.
  • Students cannot combine this award with either a Graduate School Travel Allocation or a grant from their departmental Graduate Student Association for the same event.
  • Funds will be reimbursed to the applicant's student account following submission of receipts for qualifying purchases.
  • Eligible expenses include mileage, airfare, lodging, registration, parking, and taxi/shuttle/Uber. Please note meals are not eligible for reimbursement at this time.
  • Please submit the completed application to GSA Treasurer Carly Ellen Hagg, along with a letter of support from your faculty advisor at ceh2100@uncw.edu.
  • All completed applications must be submitted no later than 3 weeks prior to the requested travel date.

Graduate School Travel Allocation

The Graduate School Travel Allocation supports student presentations of original, creative research or projects at a conference. Funds are limited and guidelines are strictly enforced. In the event of limited funds, preference will be given to applications from students beyond their first year of graduate study who did not receive a Travel Allocation last year.

Grant Conditions and Application Requirements:

  • The Graduate School Travel Allocation award is up to $750.
  • A student is eligible for only one Travel Allocation award per academic year.
  • Students may combine a Graduate School Travel Allocation with a grant from their departmental GSA for the same event. A Travel Allocation cannot be combined with the GSA Travel Grant for the same event. For more information, please refer to the application requirements and steps listed on the Graduate School website.
  • Please submit the completed application to Nancy Holland at hollandn@uncw.edu.
  • All completed applications must be submitted no later than 3 weeks prior to the requested travel date.

Departmental GSA Grants

Active Graduate Student Associations for degree-seeking departments are encouraged to provide financial support to their members for conference and workshop attendance. Please contact your department’s GSA officers for more information.
