Fraternity and Sorority Expansion Process

Each Greek Council manages their own expansion process. National organizations interested in expansion at UNCW must contact the Assistant Director, Fraternity & Sorority Life at to determine which Council best fits their organization and to review the Council-specific expansion process. Students interested in bringing a national organization to UNCW should first contact the national organization they are interested in joining prior to scheduling a meeting with the Assistant Director, Fraternity & Sorority Life.

Interfraternity Council

The following is an excerpt from the Interfraternity Council Constitution Article IV – IFC Membership, Section VII. IFC Affirmation and Adoption of NIC Standards. The adoption of these standards is a requirement of the North American Interfraternity Conference.

 K. Upon completion of these above mentioned responsible growth expectations:

  1. Any NIC member fraternity, upon expressing interest to establish a chapter, must be given a time by the IFC for the expansion to occur. The IFC can determine the best academic term for the expansion, but the expansion must occur within a four-year period from when the IFC is first notified of interest by the NIC member fraternity.
  2. NIC member fraternity with an interest group already formed will be granted IFC recognition, though the IFC may elect to have an associate member status provided reasonable written expectations and metrics are established to move from associate member status to full member status.
  3. The IFC will never take a vote on recognition or expansion for an NIC member fraternity.
  4. The IFC will never require NIC member fraternities to present an expansion proposal to the IFC, although the IFC can require the NIC fraternity to submit documentation or do a virtual presentation via a screen sharing program to determine the best academic term for expansion.
  5. The virtual presentation with the IFC Executive board must include:
    1. The number of alumni within a 30, 60, and 120 mile radius;
    2. Expansion and or Chartering timeline;

    6. A list of chapters at institutions similar to UNCW (population between 16,000 and 20,000, primarily white institution, regional university, with a fraternity and sorority population of about 15%, that do not have official chapter houses on campus)
    7. Any national requirements for membership
    8. The makeup of the advisory board for the chapter and their specific roles
    9. The national organization’s plan for support for the first three years of establishment
  6. The inter/national organization headquarters shall receive the timeline established by the IFC Executive Board no more than two months following their presentation
  7. Full membership in the IFC is limited to those fraternities (including non-NIC organizations), who have adopted all NIC Standards, are affiliated with an inter/national organization, and are men’s fraternities. Associate membership may be granted to organizations that do not meet the above criteria. Only members from Full Member chapters within the IFC are permitted to serve as IFC Executive officers, serve on the Judicial Board, or have full voting power on Constitution and Bylaw amendments.
