2020 SECU Public Fellowship Interns Announced

The University of North Carolina Wilmington is pleased to announce 10 undergraduate students who have been selected to participate in the State Employees Credit Union (SECU) Public Service Internship Program for summer 2020. The SECU Public Internship program at UNCW offers full-time, paid summer internships at nonprofits and local government offices in rural communities in Onslow, Pender, and Brunswick counties. The program is a joint effort of the Office of Community Engagement, the UNCW Career Center, QENO (Quality Enhancement for Nonprofit Organizations) and North Carolina SECU Foundation.

These 10 students, selected in a competitive process, will work through the Career Center’s Certified Internship Program (CIP). The CIP structures their work experiences to maximize learning and helps students express to future employers how their internship helped prepare them for the jobs they seek after college. Due to COVID-19, sites adapted by offering remote internships to the interns. Each student and their agency site is listed below.

Internship Site: Salvation Army

Alexis Henry is a rising senior at UNCW. She is majoring in Psychology and looks forward to gaining experience in the field. Alexis enjoys interacting with the community and helping people in any capacity. She is very excited and thankful to be participating in the SECU internship this summer!

Internship Site: Onslow Community Outreach

My name is Amanda Buttner. I am a rising senior majoring in Political Science and International Studies. In the Fall of 2019, I was able to study abroad in Salzburg, Austria, which was an incredible experience. I love to travel and hike; I was able to do both often throughout my time abroad. After graduation, I will be seeking work in the nonprofit field or I hope to find work abroad. I am passionate about improving communities and offering services that many communities lack. Nonprofit agencies are instrumental in providing aid to many marginalized populations and I would be grateful to contribute to this field.

Amber Taylor Amber Taylor
Internship Site: Philippians Place

Amber Taylor is a rising senior at UNCW from Sneads Ferry, North Carolina. She is pursuing a Bachelor’s in Social Work with a minor in Psychology. She plans to get her Masters in Social Work and continue her education to become a clinical social worker. Her passions include mental health advocacy and awareness. She is also a member of the Association of Self Care for Future Healthcare professionals.

Internship Site: Onslow Women's Center

Dakota Kiker is currently a rising Senior studying in the Cameron School of Business in which he is double concentrating in Supply Chain Management & Business Analytics. He is also a member of Pi Sigma Epsilon, Professional Marketing Fraternity. He is Interning at Onslow’s Women's Center this summer and excited to start this new experience.

Internship Site: Brunswick Family Assistance

Hello, my name is Hannah Roth. I am a rising senior in the Cameron School of Business pursuing a bachelor's degree in accounting. After graduation, I am going to continue my education for my master's degree. I am excited and grateful to be interning with Brunswick Family Assistance over the summer to help those in need. I hope to be able to use the skills and knowledge from this experience in my future career.

Internship Site: Brunswick Christian Recovery Center

Kaci is a senior in the Cameron School of Business majoring in Business Administration with a concentration in Supply Chain Management. Before UNCW Kaci was a student at Cape Fear Community College where she earned her Associate degree. Before college Kaci served four years in the United States Marine Corps as a motor vehicle operator. She enjoys spending her time helping others in need and she is set on helping Brunswick Christian Recovery Center grow in many ways.

My name is Kelsey Avery and I am from Jacksonville, NC. I am a rising senior majoring in Social Work and minoring in Psychology. After graduation I plan on obtaining my masters in counseling, and going on to work in a school setting. This summer I have to opportunity to work with Sturgeon City, and am very excited to learn and grow.

Internship Site: Countywide CDC

Stephanie Ruiz is a rising senior with a double major in Communication Studies and English, Professional Writing. Once she concludes her bachelor’s degree, she plans to pursue a master’s in Integrated Marketing Communications and eventually secure a career in public relations. She is passionate about supporting the humanities and arts, and she is looking forward to learning from Countywide CDC—an organization that is in line with this passion.

Internship Site: New Hope Clinic 

Sydney Meadows is a rising junior at UNC-Wilmington, pursing a degree in Nursing. She is from Greensboro, North Carolina. Sydney plays on the Women’s Ultimate Frisbee club team on campus, and a member of the Association of Nursing Students. She loves to spend her free time reading, running or hiking. Sydney is very excited to work with New Hope Clinic and receive more experience with patient care.

Internship Site: Brunswick Senior Resources

My name is Syd and I from China Grove, NC. I transferred to UNCW my sophomore year and it has since been the best decision of my life. I am a rising senior majoring in Public Health with a pre-clinical concentration. My current interests revolve around health disparities and epidemiology.  Health disparities and non-profits often go hand-in-hand which is why I was so drawn to this Fellowship. I plan to work in public health for a while on the frontlines looking for ways to combat those disparities. My end goal is to go on to Physician Assistant school.
