Critical Information

Praxis Core (for admission to Watson):

  • Combined Praxis Core Test # 5752 (3 tests in 1)
    or, tests can be taken separately
  • Praxis Core Reading Test # 5713
  • Praxis Core Math Test # 5733
  • Praxis Core Writing Test # 5723

Important Information about taking the Praxis:

  • These tests are offered at the UNCW Testing Center in DePaolo Hall. The correct testing site code is APCN-1747.
  • Be sure to code UNCW as a test score recipient.
  • Tests should be taken and passed during freshman or sophomore year, unless you are exempt.
  • Allow 4-6 weeks (minimum) for official test scores to arrive at the Watson College of Education. 
  • Test re-takes: An examinee may take each part of the Praxis Core test once every 35 consecutive days.


Required Core passing scores, if taken separately:

  • Reading 156 
  • Math 150 
  • Writing 162

Combined Minimum Score - 468.

  • NOTE: If taking all three sections of the Praxis Core, you must make a combined minimum score of 468, regardless of individual test scores.
  • Watson College of Education will retain your Praxis scores for 10 years from the score reporting date. After 10 years, your scores will no longer be available. When you take a test through Educational Testing Services (ETS), you will receive an email when your scores have posted. We recommend saving a copy of your score report for future reference.



  • ACT composite score of 24 or higher
  • Composite score of less than 24, but with a minimum score of 24 on English test - exempt from Praxis Core Reading and Writing
  • Composite score of less than 24, but with a minimum score of 24 on the Math test - exempt from Praxis Core Math.
  • Students with a master's degree - exempt from Praxis Core
  • Students who earned a Bachelor's degree with a cumulative GPA of 2.70 or higher - exempt
  • Students are required to provide the Watson College of Education Associate Dean's Office with the corresponding official documentation from the granting institution (University or Collegeboard) to receive exemptions for Praxis Core. For example, have an official transcript showing your GPA, if your degree exempts you, or your official test scores from the testing company, sent to you in a sealed envelope. Bring them to EB Room 322 Attn: Dianne Evans prior to the admissions deadline.

New SAT (taken March 2016 or later)

  • SAT total score of 1170 or higher on EBRW (Evidence-Based Reading and Writing) + Math) - exempt from Praxis Core exam.
  • SAT score of less than 1170, yet has SAT score of 600 or higher on EBRW - exempt from Praxis Core Reading and Writing
  • SAT score of less than 1170, yet has a score of 570 or higher on the Math test, are exempt from Praxis Core Math test. 
  • Other sections cannot be added to reach the 1170. 

Old SAT (taken prior to March 2016):

  • SAT total score of 1100 or higher (Math + Verbal) - exempt from taking Praxis Core exam. (The Writing SAT score is not counted in the total of 1100 needed for exemption.)
  • SAT score of less than 1100, yet has SAT score of 550 or higher on Verbal - exempt from Praxis Core Reading and Writing.
  • SAT score of 550 or higher on Math - exempt from Praxis Core Math.
