Students are eligible to apply for this program if they meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Degree or non-degree seeking student
  • Good judicial standing
  • 2.50+ GPA at time of application
  • Junior standing by June 2018 and graduate students in any college, as well as educators/administrators in the Watson College of Education professional partnership

Program Overview:

This 10-day trip will highlight P-12 education and teacher training, specifically focusing on refugee and immigrant education in the Netherlands. The Netherlands is recognized and one of the world leaders in providing education to refugee and immigrant children and families. Program travelers will stay in central Amsterdam and visit schools, higher education institutions, and historic sites in cities such as Utretcht and Rotterdam, as well as meet with Dutch educational policy advocacy groups. Travelers will tour the Amsterdam canals, Anne Frank House, Dutch Resistance Museum, and other World War II sites, be able to tour the famous Rijksmuseum, Rembrandt House, and Van Gogh Museum, and have the option to visit the unforgettable cities of Delft, Haarlem, and The Hague.


The academic portion of the Netherlands experience will have three strands—undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral—with each strand focusing on newcomer education from a P-12 or higher education perspective. Program students will also have the option of adding a strand that explores global education and/or international perspectives on WWII and the Holocaust.

EDN 455 International Field Experience (Required for undergraduate students)
EDN 592 International Field Experience (Required for Master’s students)
EDL 664 International Internship (Required for doctoral students)

Program Activities and Features:

Planned excursions include an Amsterdam canal tour, the Anne Frank House, the Dutch Resistance Museum, and other World War II historical sites. Optional outings include bike and walking tours of historic Amsterdam, Delft, Rotterdam, and the Hague. Travelers can also choose to visit the Zuiderzee Living History Museum, Haarlem, or other areas of the country easily reachable by train.


Students will stay in a hotel in central Amsterdam, less than a mile from the Museum Quarter and steps from tram lines that go throughout the city. Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands and one of the most popular traveler destinations in Europe, with over 5 million international visitors every year. Amsterdam is the cultural and commercial center of the Netherlands and program travelers will be able to experience its famous canals, museums, and historic sites.

The Netherlands’ large international population has led to several innovative approaches to schooling for immigrant children and teens. We will be examining Dutch approaches to newcomer education and visiting schools, educators, and higher education students and faculty in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and Utrecht, three of the Netherlands most populous and memorable cities. In addition to our educational focus, the program will also highlight the historic and cultural significance of the Netherlands.
