Student Access to Qualitative Software

Watson College, Educational Leadership is providing access to students for qualitative software (MAXQDA and Dedoose) that you might find helpful for your research.  It is an easy and fast process to apply -- just complete the survey here to initiate your request and we will make the software available to you free of charge for the duration of your qualitative course + 1 month after the course term has ended for wrap-up.

MAXQDA

What is it and what can I use it for?

MAXQDA is a software package for qualitative and mixed methods research and the only leading QDA software to offer identical features on both Windows and Mac.

MAXQDA can be used for any type of qualitative research – including but not limited to grounded theory, literature reviews, exploratory market research, qualitative text analyses, and mixed methods approaches.

A simple text document, an Excel table of survey results, a PDF file, image, website, audio or video recording, SPSS data file, bibliographic record, or focus group discussion – even YouTube comments and Twitter data – you can analyze it all.

MAXQDA also has built-in tools for professional transcriptions of audio and video recordings. You can also import transcripts you’ve created in a separate program and link your transcripts to the original media file. Or, code and analyze your media file as it is – even without transcribing it before.

Whether it’s for your analysis or publication, MAXQDA’s visual tools are tailor-made for qualitative research.

Visualize the progression of an interview, compare documents, or use MAXMaps to visualize connections in your data. The outputs are always linked to the underlying material – so you’ll never lose sight of the bigger picture.

How will I get access?

After completing the survey, a USB thumb-drive with the program will be provided to you for your use.  There are 10 portable licenses available to borrow. As outlined, access will be provided to you for one month after your semester term. You will then be contacted when your leasing term is close to expiration so a return can be arranged.

 Dedoose

What is it and what can I use it for?

Dedoose is a modern web-based platform designed to organize and analyze social science data in efficient, collaborative, and effective ways.  These data can include text, video, audio, surveys, test scores, and demographics which can all be easily imported, worked with, and exported from the system.  Dedoose is particularly ideal for mixed methods research where the nature of the work is increasingly collaborative and crosses disciplinary boundaries.

How will I get access?

After completing the survey, Dedoose Support will contact you to set up an individual user account to access the web-based program.  As stated, access will be provided to you for one month after your semester term.  You will then be contacted when your term is close to expiration to see if you would like your account transferred to a personal one where the fee is paid by you.
