CSB Alumni Chapter Update

This Cameron School of Business (CSB) proudly welcomed 400 new graduates this May to join the ranks of more than 13,000 CSB alumni and more than 56,000 UNCW alumni. Everyone who has attended Cameron School is considered a valued member of the UNCW Alumni Association and the CSB Alumni Chapter.

The chapter hosts signature events throughout the year including the quarterly Speaker Breakfast Series, Homecoming Reunion Breakfast and the Alumni and Retired Faculty Mixer during Business Week. On Feb. 19, the CSB Alumni Chapter hosted a Homecoming reunion breakfast in the Computer Information Systems Building. One hundred alumni, faculty and current students had a great time sharing stories and learning about the past and the future of CSB. Alumni from several different decades of graduating classes enjoyed comparing their UNCW experiences.

Eighty alumni and guests gathered for the annual Alumni a Retired Faculty Mixer on March 1 during Business Week to network and honor the CSB Outstanding Alumni Award recipients. Alumni board past chair Donis Noe Smith '86, '94M was one of the recipients, as well as Gareth Montague-Smith '96, '97M and Judy R. Tharp '78.

Business Week is a highly beneficial event for students and alumni alike. With around 200 guest speakers, including almost 100 alumni from all over the country, the students enjoyed an educational week as they heard from professionals from many different fields. Notable alumni speakers included alumni board past chair Jason Wheeler '99, '03M, former CSB Breakfast Series speaker Jeff Mann '92', alumni award recipient Malcomb Coley '86, '89M and many others.

On April 7, 40 alumni, faculty, staff, students and community members gathered in Burney Center for a networking breakfast with keynote speaker Livian Jones. As a 1995 MBA graduate and vice president of John S. Clark Company, Jones has soared to great heights throughout her career in the construction and engineering industry while continuously giving back to her community. She makes time for countless volunteer hours and board leadership positions. Jones spoke about the importance and economic impact of community involvement. Guests enjoyed the beautiful spring morning as they made new connections over breakfast and spoke with old friends and faculty members. The CSB Alumni Chapter will host its next Speaker Breakfast Series later this summer. Check the online calendar for updates and future events..

The Cameron School of Business Alumni Chapter is run by a volunteer committee of 15 alumni. The committee includes alumni of all ages and geographic locations as well as two retired faculty representatives, Denis Carter and Jack Morgan. Jason Brett '01 is the outgoing chairperson of the committee. In his two years as chairperson, Brett helped to re-energize the chapter and spearheaded the effort to create the Alumni Speaker Breakfast Series. Brett will graduate from the MSA program this summer and will be relocating to Charlotte, NC with his family with a position at Deloitte. Kevin Fanning '02 was appointed as the 2011-2012 Chairperson of the Committee and Susan Chandler Webb '07 will continue to serve as the vice chairperson. Fanning is the office executive at East Carolina Bank in Porters Neck in Wilmington. He has served on the committee for over a year and describes his commitment to UNCW: "It is important for me to stay involved with UNCW and CSB for many reasons. First, it allows me to give something back to a university and business school which has given me so much. It also gives me an opportunity to connect with other alumni, both personally and professionally. My experience as an active alum has provided great networking opportunities with business leaders and decision makers and has kept me connected with the excitement of campus life."
