CMS Research :: NC National Estuarine Research Reserve
In 1982, the North Carolina National Estuarine Research Reserve (NCNERR) was established to preserve these valuable habitats for long-term research, monitoring, education, and other compatible uses. The NCNERR consists of four separate components, Currituck Banks, Rachel Carson, Masonboro Island, and Zeke's Island. As part of a national system of estuarine reserves, these sites are managed by the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Division of Coastal Management, as a resource for all its citizens. It is necessary to preserve and learn how to best manage these sites because of the many benefits these estuaries provide.
