UNCW School of Social Work
Alumni and Field Instructors

As we have done for the past few years, the UNCW School of Social Work will be sponsoring a trip to India to visit our sister school of social work at St. Joseph’s College in Bangalore, India. While you are in Bangalore, you can, if you wish, be partnered with an Indian MSW student who is enrolled in the St. Joseph College School of Social Work, who will be your “buddy”, accompanying you while you are there.  You will be able to attend social work classes and/or visit social service agencies while in Bangalore, India.  In addition, you will have the opportunity to visit the Taj Mahal as part of this trip.  As part of the experience, you will have the opportunity to attend and participate in an international conference discussing the differences of mental health treatment in the USA and India. You will receive 13 CEU’s for attending this conference.  The trip will be led by Dr. Art Frankel, who has extensive experience with India, speaks the local language, and has led the trip for the last four years.

The dates for this trip are: Leaving the USA on December 7, returning to the USA on December 18, although you can choose different dates during the time Dr. Frankel is in Bangalore.  You will receive support on every aspect of the trip, including help in buying your air ticket, finding a hotel, getting your Indian visa, and learning everything you need to know to make this trip a life-changing experience for you.

The total cost for the trip will be between $2,500 and $3,500, depending on the cost of air tickets and the cost of your hotel, which can range from $60 to $200 a night. (In the past we have used the travel agent who works with UNCW to find the cheapest tickets, which range from $1,200 to $1,800 depending on when you buy your ticket). This range, between $2,500 and $3,500, includes all costs for the trip, including airfare, airport transfers, some meals, Indian visa, all tour buses, tickets to enter the Taj Mahal, and one hotel night near the Taj Mahal. Food will cost you only about $10 a day or less.  Your only other costs will be about $50 for some other trip items, spending money for what you decide to buy, as there are many wonderful things to bring home from India, and some pocket money.

Should you be interested in joining us for this chance-of-a-lifetime trip, please email your name to Dr. Art Frankel indicating your interest at if you want to be included.  In about a month, we will schedule a meeting for all of those who have indicated their interest in this trip, to discuss the details and answer any questions you might have.

If you need more information about this trip, please do not hesitate to contact Dr. Frankel, by email, or by phone at 910-352-5685. NAMESTE!
