Requests for Research and Innovation Expenses

  • Submission deadline for all requests: October 25, 2021 at 5 p.m. EST
  • Deadline for completing expenditures: April 15, 2022

Purposes of Grant Competition:

  • To provide training and workshops to new faculty in CHHS about the grant submission and award processes
    To offer seed funding to faculty who have never received funding (internal or external grants) at UNCW

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Must hold a full-time faculty/staff appointment in the College of Health and Human Services
  • New faculty are encouraged to apply and will receive priority consideration
  • Faculty who have never received any internal or external funding at UNCW
  • Faculty must meet with Richard Huse ( prior to submission for training and consultation about budget and proposal guidelines
  • Faculty who receive an award will be required to participate in a funding workshop

Submission Guidelines

Requests ranging from $500 up to $10,000 per full-time faculty/staff member in CHHS can be submitted until 5pm EST October 25th, 2021. These submissions will be received and reviewed by a review committee. Funding associated with monies (if approved) must be spent on or before the fiscal deadlines for the university. Only ONE “Funding Your ‘New’ Passion” submission per CHHS full-time faculty member.

Examples of allowable Research and Innovation expenses: approved software and technology (must be a university-approved vendor), database subscriptions, equipment, lab or research supplies, printing, publication fees (journal open access), a research assistant, supplemental pay for your collaborator, resources like books, and professional development/training opportunities. NOTE: You must allow 3-4 weeks for business processing to occur once monies are awarded. Any publication costs must include submission status or anticipated acceptance date. Software purchases will require review and collaboration with ITS at the university. Vendors must be pre-approved by the university for all purchases.

Do not request the following items:

  • Food or beverages
  • Gifts or participant incentives
  • Swag items
  • Flowers/plants
  • Gift cards
  • Services or products already available in CHHS or UNCW (e.g. Qualtrics)
  • Items from non-approved vendors
  • External independent contractors

Must include:

  • Total dollar amount of request
  • Budget Justification/description and rationale of item(s) requested: Including estimated cost (please round up and account for shipping fees) *1000 word limit
  • Project rationale: How will the funding advance science and support your research and innovation project/scholarly agenda? *1000 word limit
  • Describe significance and how your request (and associated project) aligns with the CHHS strategic plan/values of interprofessional collaboration, student engagement, diversity and inclusion, and/or community engagement *1000 word limit
  • Approach: Describe study aims/hypotheses, proposed methods, design, analysis plan *1500 word  limit
  • Proposed scholarly deliverables (How will this funding lead to an external grant submission or publication in a peer-reviewed journal? If innovation project, please discuss plan for building a prototype, seeking a provisional patent, etc…) *500 word limit


I agree to the following:

  • I will seek IRB approval if project involves human subjects
  • All purchasing will be in compliance with university guidelines and follow CHHS process
  • I will expend all approved funds by April 15, 2022
  • I will consult with Richard Huse at prior to my submission, attend required workshops, and direct any questions or concerns about my purchases throughout the process
  • If I am unable to spend approved funds for any reason, I will alert Richard Huse as soon as possible
  • I will receive approval from my School Director or supervisor for this submission
  • All purchased items remain property of the university and should not be used for personal use (or as participant incentives)
  • Any budget modification involving purchasing items not listed in the original application will require an updated budget justification
  • Faculty who receive an award will be required to participate in a funding workshop
