Yoga Studies Minor Students Graduate with Certification

June 14, 2022 - On May 3, 39 UNCW students graduated with their Yoga Alliance certification.

Yoga Alliance is a set of standards that provides an ethical and educational framework for yoga teachers and schools to ensure high quality, safe, accessible, and equitable yoga teaching in communities around the world. According to UNCW yoga instructor, Jessica Hartmann, Yoga Alliance is “truly the gold standard that governs yoga teachers. It sets the ethical guidelines for students to practice not only just in the United States, but globally,” she said.

Yoga studies minor graduatesCourses include human anatomy and physiology, yoga methodology and techniques, Asian religions, health and aging, mindfulness and kinesiology.

Remarking on the beach-side graduating ceremony, Hartmann noted that, “It's the most heartwarming, rewarding experience that I can think of. I know that as teachers to see these students just grow as people and for us to grow as teachers and watch them step out into the world is so satisfying,” she said.

Many of these graduating students are becoming yoga instructors within the Wilmington community. For Jessica Hartmann and fellow yoga instructor, Laura Siljander, establishing a partnership with the Cape Fear region and producing local high-quality yoga instructors is a cornerstone of their overall mission.

“So many nearby studios are excited about the prospect of becoming involved with the yoga minor that it's been awesome to have the opportunity to build these relationships within the community. And I think we'll continue to foster those relationships and grow even more,” Siljander said.

In 2019, the School of Health and Applied Human Sciences was approved as a Registered Yoga School for the Yoga Studies Minor through Yoga Alliance. UNCW is only the second university in the country to offer a yoga minor. Still very new with only four graduated cohorts, the minor provides students with the knowledge needed to teach yoga as a career or use yoga as a tool when working with clients as physical therapists, occupational therapists, recreational therapists, personal trainers, social workers, teachers and more.
