Recreation Therapy Recognized at 2021 ATRA Virtual Conference

10/21 – American Therapeutic Recreation Association (ATRA) recognized CHHS students and faculty at its virtual conference and awards ceremony on Sept. 14.

ATRA-Conference-WEB.jpgUNCW recreation therapy alumna Sarah Sticklin ’20 and seniors Lilly Teseniar and Melissa Valyo-Smith won Peg Connolly Scholarships. The working scholarship program covers the costs of the conference for scholars in exchange for their assistance with managing the conference. These scholarships are considered the most prestigious within the recreational therapy profession. In addition, Katie Huffman ‘19 won the Certificate of Recognition award for her meritorious service and her contributions to the profession and ATRA organization. Recreation Therapy faculty Sara Miller and Brent Hawkins were recognized for their leadership and service to the profession.

Program Coordinator Brent Hawkins said, “The representation of UNCW Recreation Therapy students, alumni and faculty was very cool to see, because it highlights the impact we’re having on the profession!”

ATRA is the national non-profit membership organization that represents the interests and needs of recreational therapists and exists to support and empower recreational therapists.
