We introduced a new app to help the UNCW community navigate that experience and make the most of what the university offers. The UNCW Mobile App provides quick access to key campus information and emergency notifications. Download it to easily review university resources and stay updated with the latest news and events.
Our news includes a comprehensive Campus Master Plan approved by the Board of Trustees. The plan draws on feedback from more than 1,700 students, faculty, staff, alumni and Wilmington community members. Planned areas of growth include a campus welcome center, more parking, a residence hall on the former Galloway Hall site, upgraded athletic facilities and academic building additions and expansions. The newly reopened UNCW Library serves as a preview of what is to come.
The university recently addressed new equality policy requirements enacted by the UNC Board of Governors. Careful and deliberate thought was given to the impact on students, staff, programs and services. We shifted our identity and cultural centers to Student Affairs to ensure an ongoing focus on students with significant operational support, improved resource sharing and increased collaboration. We avoided layoffs and moved some staff members to the Student Engagement, Enrollment and Retention team, emphasizing efforts to help all students thrive at UNCW.
The complex UNCW community is a flexible one, welcoming new members and helping others soar. This semester, Chris DePerno, a professor at NC State University’s College of Natural Resources, joins UNCW as a 2024-25 American Council on Education (ACE) Fellow. At the same time, Stuart Borrett, associate provost for Research and Innovation, has begun serving as rotating program director at the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF). For the 2024-25 academic year, Borrett will serve at the NSF headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia. Justine Reel, an associate dean for research and innovation from the College of Health and Human Services, will serve as interim associate provost for research and innovation.
Join me in enjoying the excitement of the start of a new academic year! UNCW is building toward an even stronger future on a foundation of strong academic scholarship and research. We have much to look forward to this fall, including a great fall sports season and compelling arts programs.
Yours in Seahawk spirit,
