Message from Chancellor Sartarelli: UNCW Launches Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Search

Sept. 16, 2020

Dear Campus Community:

Below you will find a message from Provost Jamie Winebrake, Associate Vice Chancellor Liz Grimes and Dr. Nathan Grove about the launch of UNCW’s search for the new Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs. We lost an extraordinary leader when the late Pat Leonard passed away in June, but she would have wanted us to move forward purposefully and collaboratively to recruit a new Vice Chancellor to inspire, support and guide the Division of Student Affairs. I want to personally encourage all of you to participate in this search to the best of your ability. Please contact vcsasearch@uncw.eduto share your insights and ask any questions you may have.

We will keep you posted on the search via this websiteand various campus communication channels.

Thank you for your commitment to helping UNCW determine the qualities and experience our next Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs should embody.

Jose V. Sartarelli

Dear Campus Community:

When the late Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Pat Leonard passed away in June, we lost a true Seahawk who was known far and wide for her dedication to our students, which was firmly rooted in her commitment to “Creating Experiences for Life.” While we cannot replicate her 37 years of leadership experience at UNCW,we can recruit a dedicated and insightful leader to fill this critical position as our next Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs. As such, the university is in the early stages of launching a nationwide search for the next VCSA, and has retained the search firm Isaacson, Miller to facilitate this process.

Over the next few weeks, consultants from Isaacson, Miller will meet with representatives from 15 areas across campus to learn more about the Division of Student Affairs; the support, service, and educational programs offered by the division’s 14 functional departments; and the vision the university community has for the living/learning environment on campus. Through this process, the consultants hope to determine the key challenges and opportunities the campus community anticipates the incoming VCSA may face. These discussions will help Isaacson, Miller gain an understanding of the university’s culture, current environment, aspirations and the organizational context in which the next VCSA will operate.

Following these conversations, the consultants will develop a position profile that will include a compelling description of UNCW and the experience expected of those applying for the role. When finalized, this document will be made available to the campus community and the public, and will be shared broadly by the search firm with prospective candidates and helpful sources. Although they will certainly draw upon their own networks, the consultants want to make sure to tap into ours as well; your insight and recommendations can be shared (confidentially) via

We want to thank the representatives who will soon be invited to meet with the consultants. Campus input is an essential component of a successful search, and we welcome your engagement and participation.
