Office of the Chancellor

Message from Chancellor Jose V. Sartarelli: Launch of Provost Search

Sept. 30, 2019

Dear Campus Community:

Below you will find a message from Vice Chancellor Pat Leonard, Vice Chancellor Miles Lackey, and Dr. Nathan Grove regarding the launch of UNCW’s search for a new provost. Provost Sheerer will undoubtedly be as strong an asset to the Watson College of Education as she has been to the university at large, and we can only hope that our next leader of Academic Affairs will be as devoted, passionate and collaborative as she has been. I want to personally encourage all of you to participate in this search to the best of your ability. Please attend the campus forum at 4 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 7 in the Burney Center to share your insights and ask any questions you may have.

We will keep you posted on the search via this website and various campus communication channels.

Thank you for your attention and careful consideration of what qualities and experience our next Provost should embody!

Dear Campus Community:

As you are aware, Dr. Marilyn Sheerer will be stepping down from her position as Provost and Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs in May 2020. As such, the university is in the initial stages of launching a nationwide search to fill this critical position, and has retained the search firm Isaacson, Miller to facilitate this process.

On Monday, Oct. 7, 2019, consultants from Isaacson, Miller will be on campus to meet with campus constituents. Faculty, staff and students are invited to an open forum at 4 p.m. on Oct. 7 in the Burney Center.

The consultants from Isaacson, Miller hope to learn more about what it's like to learn and work at UNCW, as well as what you consider to be the key challenges and opportunities the incoming Provost may face. These discussions will help them gain an understanding of the university’s culture, current environment, and organizational context in which the next Provost will operate.

Following this visit to campus, which will also include individual meetings with campus leaders and other constituents, the consultants will develop a position profile that will provide a compelling description of UNCW, and the experience desired of those applying for the role. When finalized, this document will be made available to campus and the public, and will be shared broadly by the search firm with prospective candidates and helpful sources. Although they will certainly draw upon their own networks, they want to make sure to tap into ours as well; your recommendations can be shared (confidentially) via

Thank you for your participation in this important effort. Campus input will be invaluable to the outcome of this search, and we welcome your engagement and collaboration.
