Summer Ventures

In past years, UNCW hosted one of five Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics (SVSM) Institutes administered by the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics (NCSSM). SVSM is a cost-free, state-funded program for academically talented students who may pursue careers based in science and mathematics.

The program brought rising juniors and seniors together in residential settings for four weeks of intensive study on university campuses (Appalachian State University, East Carolina University, NC Central University, UNC Charlotte and UNC Wilmington).

The successful 2011 UNCW Summer Ventures program hosted 48 outstanding North Carolina high school students from 40 high schools in 27 counties!

A distinguished faculty of UNCW professors and master high school teachers guided students through an academic program of specially designed courses to provide experiences in scientific inquiry and mathematical problem solving.

At UNCW, Summer Ventures was administered through the Science and Mathematics Education Center, Dr. Dennis Kubasko, CESTEM Director. The CESTEM Assistant Director, Mr. Chris Gordon, coordinated SVSM program logistics, while Dr. Gabriel Lugo, UNCW Department of Mathematics and Statistics, was the SVSM Faculty Liaison. Mrs. Kim Cavender was the SVSM Director of Residence Life.
