Program Overview

High School Teachers in Demand

Teaching high school is a rewarding profession that allows you to have an influence on students’ development at a crucial stage in their lives. The need for North Carolina high school teachers is great, and in order to fill teaching vacancies, the state allows teachers to work in the school system with a bachelor’s degree while obtaining  a NC teaching license.

Earn Your License Online

Our residency licensure pathway supports non-certified teachers who have been hired to teach mathematics, science, English or social studies in grades 9-12 in North Carolina public schools. Coursework is designed to lead to NC teacher certification in your field of study.

This 18 credit-hour program can be completed in just over one year and is designed to accommodate working professionals while providing preparation for effective teaching and learning in the classroom. Dedicated faculty with extensive teaching experience teach all courses in this efficient and comprehensive program.

Field experiences may be completed in the teacher’s classroom, and edTPA support is embedded within the program to make the licensing process smoother for participating students. 

Develop Strong Teaching Skills

Candidates in the secondary residency licensure program will develop knowledge and skills commensurate with that of a first-year high school teacher. You will gain knowledge of effective teaching methods and instructional strategies for meeting the needs of students in their early to late teen years. You will also learn how to establish a classroom environment sensitive to the needs of all students and ways to use technology to enhance the academic achievement of all learners.

Our secondary residency courses are offered at the graduate level. This is not a degree program, but all courses can be transferred into our Master of Arts in Teaching in Secondary Education degree program.

  3. Eligibility:  The state of North Carolina Department of Public Instruction requires that applicants have an undergraduate GPA of 2.7 to receive a teaching license.
  4. Note: This program is designed to provide coursework in the field of Teaching Secondary Education for non-certified teachers who have been hired to teach in high schools. This coursework is designed to lead to NC teacher certification. This is not a degree program. Applicants seeking a masters degree should apply to the Secondary Education Specialization, M.A.T. degree.
  5. Financial Aid: Non-federal loans are available for this program. Admitted students may apply through the UNCW Scholarship Application to be considered for additional scholarships. Please consult your Financial Aid Counselor for further details.
  6. Visa Sponsorship:  This program does not qualify for visa sponsorship.

    Secondary Education Specialization, MAT

    Our MAT in Secondary Education is a one-year, full-time on-campus program, designed for individuals who hold a bachelor’s degree and would like to teach at the high school level. It offers teacher licensure in high school English, mathematics, science and social studies.

    The two-year licensure program is designed for students who are simultaneously completing a degree through the College of Humanities, Social Sciences and the Arts. Programs leading to teacher licensure are offered in the fields of biology, chemistry, physics, environmental science, geology, English, anthropology, history, sociology, political science and mathematics.

    Secondary Education, Bachelor’s/Master’s Combined Program

    Our combined program in secondary education is designed to provide students currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, science, history, English or a related field at UNCW the opportunity to also complete a master’s degree in secondary education within a five-year period (including one summer).
