Program Details

The Master of Science in Marine Science program provides a broad interdisciplinary understanding of marine science to students with a strong background in mathematics and science. Learn more about the M.S. in Marine Science offered at UNCW.

Biological Oceanography
Chemical Oceanography
Marine Geology
Physical Oceanography
Graduate Seminar
Thesis (3-6 credit hours)

Elective Credits

Elective courses must be at the 500-level or higher, be relevant to student’s course of study (as discerned by the student’s thesis committee), and may come from any of the relevant academic departments. Normally, a M.S. in marine science student will take a total of 12 to 15 elective credits to fulfill the degree requirements.

Marine Policy Concentration

In addition to the core and other required courses, students seeking a Master of Science in marine science with a concentration in marine policy must also complete:

Environmental Policy Analysis or Natural Resource Policy

and one of the following:

Resource Economics
Environmental Economics
Natural Resource Economics

and two additional 500 level courses in BIO, CHM, GLY or PHY

and one course from any of these areas:

GIS
Fundamentals of GIS
Environmental GIS
Geospatial Analysis for Coastal Management

Remote Sensing
Remote Sensing in Environmental Analysis
Remote Sensing for Environmental Management

Management
Foundations of Coastal Management
Public Management
