Alumni are employed as:

Teach Spanish at a community college or university.

Teach Spanish at the K-12 levels in a private school, or if licensed, at a public school.

Teach English abroad or in the U.S. to speakers of other languages (requires licensure at the K-12 public schools level).

Interpret or translate in medical, educational, legal and community fields (may require separate certification).

Work in Student Affairs at a university, meeting the needs of prospective and current Latinx students.

Learn To

Raise the level of communicative competence of native and non-native speakers of Spanish

Train professionals ready to work and interact with the Latinx population in the U.S. and abroad

Increase, improve and promote cultural understanding and awareness of regional, national and international Spanish-speaking communities

Provide knowledge and advanced skills in the Spanish language and Hispanic cultures necessary for higher-level graduate work

Spanish, M.A. Program Overview

A Diverse Community of Scholars

Our graduate program in Spanish features a wide variety of courses in literature, linguistics, film studies, history, culture, pedagogy and other topics. Courses are taught by faculty who are active researchers in their fields. With graduate students from the United States, Latin America and Spain, the graduate program brings together dedicated students with diverse backgrounds and professional and academic experiences.

Ideal for Working Professional or Traditional Students

All our Spanish graduate courses are taught in the evenings or asynchronously online which allows us to serve traditional as well as non-traditional students. We offer a number of teaching assistantships and tuition scholarships to incoming students on a competitive basis.

Get Hands-on Training

Students who are awarded a graduate teaching assistantship position gain hands-on experience interacting with language learners by working in our Spanish Conversation Center, co-teaching beginning and intermediate Spanish courses and teaching their own sections of Spanish language courses.

Conduct Research with Faculty Experts

Our students work closely with faculty who are experts in their fields of study to create original, meaningful scholarship. Students are encouraged to seize the opportunity to develop their passions and interests.

Many first - and second-year students travel to conduct research, present their findings at national and international conferences and publish articles in peer-reviewed journals and books.

  2. Speaking Samples:
    The speaking samples will be uploaded as audio files (20 mb limit per file) after submission of the online application. Two speaking samples, one in English and one in Spanish, in which the applicant introduces her/himself and describes a meaningful cultural experience.
  3. Writing Sample:
    A 500-word written statement in English describing career goals after completion of the M.A. program.
  4. Writing Sample:
    A 500-word writing sample in Spanish in which the applicant states and defends an opinion.
