In conjunction with their studies in other departments, our graduates acquire highly sought-after skills in the job market (Source: NACE Job Outlook 2024, p.26) and are extremely well-prepared for a variety of professions (international or domestic) in fields including, but not limited to: film, business, government and politics, engineering, law, education, tourism, healthcare, and scientific research and development.

Not only will you become fluent in another language, but you will also become knowledgeable about the cultures, history, and artistic production of the French-speaking world! Our curriculum in French and Francophone Studies reflects that French is understood in 55 countries and spoken by more than 300 million people across 5 continents.

Pi Delta Phi
Pi Delta Phi is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies. It is represented at public and private colleges and universities throughout the US, Paris and Aix-en-Provence. Nu Kappa is UNCW's chapter, established in 2003. It is the 321st chapter of the Society.
Pi Delta Phi recognizes students' outstanding achievement in French language and literatures of the French-speaking world.
The Society's Motto
Probaínomen Diakritoi Philogálatoi-(Greek for "Avançons, amis fidèles de la culture française") which means: "Forward, faithful friends of French culture"
Students at UNCW who meet the Society's membership requirements are invited to join. Members of Pi Delta Phi are eligible to apply for one of the Society's generous scholarships for summer study abroad. Consult the National Pi Delta Phi website for more information.

Study Abroad
Students studying French are encouraged to make the most of UNCW’s exceptional study abroad programs. These experiences offer the chance to explore the French-speaking world and immerse yourself in new cultures. You can choose to study in France, Quebec, or Senegal.

NC in Paris Consortium
Location: Foyer International des Etudiantes in Paris, France
Dates:
Fall: approx. September 2-December 22
Spring: approx. January 27- June 1st
Deadlines to apply: October 1 for Spring and April 1 for Fall every year
Students can choose between 12, 15 or 18 credit hours of French language study at the historical Institut Catholique de Paris.
Explorations in French now has three exciting options for students to choose from:
- Option A - Explore Arts and History of Paris
- Option B - Explore French Society from Inside: English TA internship in local middle schools
- Option C - Explore French Society from Inside: Work as a volunteer with local Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and Non-Profit Organizations (NPOs)
Students will be given assignments based on the chosen option, personal goals and interests. Such assignments may include:
- Visits to current art exhibitions
- Conduction of surveys in Parisian neighborhoods
- Participation in cooking classes
- Artistic workshops
- Conversational exchanges with locals
- And much more!
Summer in Morocco
Location: Rabat, Morocco
Dates: Usually from mid May - mid June
Apply by March 15
Courses Offered:
- FRH 394 (Moroccan Conversations)
- ARB 294 (Everyday Moroccan Arabic)
- INT 394 (The Global Politics of Eating - An African Perspective)
This five-week program allows you to discover and study the rich cultures of Morocco. The course integrates classroom instruction and field-based activities.
Immerse yourself in a multicultural society at the crossroads of Europe and Africa, and live the Moroccan lifestyle. Drink mint tea, eat tajines, and discuss Morocco’s regional and global significance with your instructors and your Arabic and French-speaking family!
Embark on a breathtaking tour of Morocco to learn about the intersection of Berber, Arab and French cultures. In the North, walk the thousand-year-old roads of Volubilis and the maze of the medina in Fez.
The second excursion, which takes place in the South, will take you to Marrakech and the High Atlas Mountains. This 5-day trip ends with a camel ride in the Sahara desert after a stop is Ouarzazate.
