What is a Postdoctoral Scholar?

The University of North Carolina Wilmington has adopted the definition of postdoctoral scholar from the National Postdoctoral Association: A postdoctoral scholar ("postdoc") is an individual who has received a doctoral degree (or equivalent) and is engaged in a temporary and defined period of mentored advanced training to enhance the professional skills and research independence needed to pursue his or her chosen career path.

Postdoc Appointments

The appointee, who has earned a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate (e.g., Sc.D., M.D.) or terminal degree within the last five years, is temporarily appointed to engage in full-time research or scholarship under the mentorship of a faculty member. This appointment is preparatory for a full-time academic, research, or other career, with the freedom to publish or disseminate their research results during the appointment period.
