North Carolina state law requires all teacher candidates to meet identified criteria and be admitted to an approved Teacher Education program. Candidates must be admitted to the Watson College of Education prior to the start of the teacher internship semester. To be admitted to WCE, students must apply to WCE and meet ALL the following requirements:
- Minimum UNCW cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.70 for undergraduates and 3.0 for out-of-area students.
- Passing scores on Praxis Core or exemption from the test with ACT or SAT score. The Student Success Center website provides information about the Praxis, exemption scores, and how to register to take the Praxis.
Admission Requirements
Admission to teacher preparation programs at UNCW is a two-step process. The first step is admission to the university. Students will take the second step and apply to the Watson College of Education during their sophomore or junior year at UNCW. Transfer students apply during their first semester at Watson.
To Apply:
- Complete application submitted to WCE by the deadline (see below)
- Minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.70
- Passing scores on Praxis or exemption from exam Learn more about the Praxis, exemption scores, and how to register to take the Praxis.
- Unless you are exempt, students are encouraged to take and pass the Praxis Core as soon as possible.
Praxis Information
- August 1 to take courses in the Fall semester
- December 1 to take courses in the Spring semester
- May 1 to take courses in the Summer or upcoming Fall semester
