The Department of Biology and Marine Biology is a dynamic and engaged department offering a rich and diverse array of research programs and degrees options. Our students and faculty actively engage in scientific inquiry across various life sciences, utilizing state-of-the-art facilities and field experiences.

Our Mission

The Department of Biology and Marine Biology at UNCW strives to prepare the next generation of scientists and educators, and equip all students to make sound judgments based on a solid foundation of biological principles. Our department focuses on four particular ideals:

  • Amplifying excellent teaching with diverse research opportunities
  • Emphasizing current theories of Biological Science, knowledge of basic investigative skills, and methods of critical inquiry
  • Centering our research programs around the biological phenomena that impact life in our region and the broader world
  • Lending our professional expertise to all endeavors that advance environmental sustainability and enhance human well-being

We are committed to ensuring that modern biological principles extend beyond the classroom and enable our students to make meaningful contributions as global citizens.
