History
Established in 2000 under the visionary guidance of former CEO of HarperCollins Canada and distinguished visiting professor Stanley Colbert, The Publishing Laboratory serves as both a classroom for graduate and undergraduate students and a fully functioning small press that issues original works under its own name.
Mission
Publishing is much more than the simple printing and distribution of books; it is a creative endeavor in its own right, combining a passion for the written word with an understanding of how to effectively reach readers. An integral part of the Department of Creative Writing, The Publishing Laboratory is a professional educational enterprise with two main imperatives.
Today
Located in the newly renovated Kenan Hall, the Department of Creative Writing is home to a state-of-the-art design and production laboratory featuring seventeen iMac computers, Adobe CreativeSuite 6, two professional laser printers, a top-of-the-line plotter, a Challenge Titan guillotine book trimmer, and a Duplo perfect binder, in which Pub Lab students explore the artistic as well as the practical facets of editing, designing, and publishing original books and journals
