Since 2002, the UNCW History Department has hosted the Sherman Emerging Scholar Lecture Series, an annual lecture series established to honor two lifelong learners and friends of the department, Virginia and Derrick Sherman.
On Oct 16, 2024, Dr. En Li will deliver the 23rd annual lecture. The lecture will be followed by a roundtable discussion on Oct. 17 with distinguished scholars Dr. Amy Gordanier, Dr. Carl Kubler, Dr. Tonio Andrade, and moderator Dr. Yixin Chen.
The 2024 Sherman Scholar is En Li
En Li is an Assistant Professor at the University of Texas at Dallas. Dr. Li earned her Ph.D from Washington University in St. Louis and earned her B.A. and M.A. in Chinese Literature from Sun Yat-sen University in China. She currently offers courses on the histories of China and East Asia, as well as Asian books and movies. Her first book, "Betting on the Civil Service Examinations: The Lottery in Late-Qing China," puts a magnifying glass on such gambling and highlights critical development with Chinese culture and society in the late nineteenth century.
