Starfish is a student success platform that provides students, faculty, and staff an interconnected system to stay engaged and communicate questions and concerns more easily. The use of Starfish at UNCW helps us to improve the efficiency and efficacy of supporting our students, connecting them to the appropriate resources, and improving their success and wellbeing.
Starfish helps UNCW to provide faster and more comprehensive support to students. It also provides faculty and staff with an easy way to provide students with feedback and support, and for students to request help, even when they don’t whom to ask.
Starfish helps students to utilize their campus support network and foster a strong sense of connection.
Early Alerts help instructors and advisors monitor the progress of students throughout the semester. Students can be given advice, support, or recommendations to connect to academic support services across campus.
Progress surveys are intentional pulse checks in the early alert system that are used at key times in the semester. They allow instructors to highlight a concern (raise a flag), recommend support (a referral), or commend good work (a kudo).
A flag denotes concern around attendance, academic performance, academic progress, and class participation. Some flags require no action and are merely informational. Others act in concert with referrals (recommending an action be taken for support – ie tutoring, success coaching, etc.). To-dos place accountability on a student to follow through with a requested action. Kudos are ways to celebrate positive progress and commend students for their work.
