Advise NC at UNCW

EXPLORE MORE

We were founded in 2021-2022 as UNCW College Advising Corps. After co-founding Advise NC along with NC State University, Duke University, Appalachian State University, and UNC Chapel Hill, the program transitioned to Advise NC at UNCW. We recruit and train recent college graduates to serve as advisers in partner schools throughout Eastern North Carolina. Advisers participate in an intensive four-week summer training program to gain the skills needed to effectively advise students on college enrollment, military enlistment, and employment. During their service, advisers gain valuable professional, leadership, and advocacy experiences as they work to support students on their path to success. Next Step Advisers work full-time in underserved high schools advising students to turn their dreams into a reality.

Advise NC is committed to supporting high school students throughout North Carolina as they plan for their postsecondary pathways, including college enrollment, employment, and military enlistment.

A North Carolina where every student has the guidance and resources necessary to pursue postsecondary opportunities, driving social mobility, economic growth, and a more prosperous future for all.

Nationally, the student-to-counselor ratio exceeds 482:1, leaving many students with as little as 20 minutes a year with a counselor who can provide personalized postsecondary guidance. Too often, students receive little support as they explore their options after high school, whether that path is enrolling in college, enlisting in the military, or entering the workforce. Without consistent advising, many students struggle to identify best-fit pathways, navigate applications and requirements, and successfully transition into and persist in their chosen postsecondary plan.

Our near-peer advising approach allows advisers to build relationships with the students they serve while sharing their recent college experience. Next Step Advisers use a whole-school approach to work with students, families, school staff, and administrators to empower students to pursue college enrollment, military enlistment, or employment after high school. Advisers educated the school community through one-on-one advising, classroom presentations, and workshops.

Advise NC at UNCW hires and trains new Next Step Advisers each year to serve in our partner high schools. The Next Step Adviser job posting opens during the spring semester on the UNCW job portal and remains active until all positions are filled. Advisers begin their pre-service training in July at UNCW where on-campus housing is provided for those who needed. After training is completed in August, advisers relocate to their service areas and adhere to the staff work schedule at their assigned high school for the remainder of the academic year. Advisers serve for an 11-month service term (July-June) and have the option to return for a second year of service.
