07.200.07 Campus Electronic Resources Disaster

This document explains university policy concerning the responsible management of the Campus Electronic Resources Disaster Recovery Plan. The primary purpose of the disaster recovery plan is to help ensure the continued operation of the university by providing the ability to successfully recover computer services in the even of a disaster.

Policy Details:

  1. Purpose

    The purpose of the ITS Disaster Recovery Plan (DRP) and the ITS Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP) is to ensure the continued operation of the university by providing the ability to successfully recover central ITS services and provide ITS client services in the event of a disaster.

    DRP: “A written plan for processing critical applications in the event of a major hardware or software failure or destruction of facilities.” – NIST.gov

    COOP: “A plan that outlines the actions and resources needed to continue essential agency functions during a variety of crisis situations, specifically when the primary facilities are either threatened or inaccessible.” – UNCW COOP Planning Template

  2. Policy

    1. The ITS Disaster Recovery Plan is periodically reviewed by ITS and UNCW Internal Audit and is included in audits conducted by the North Carolina Office of the State Auditor. An effective ITS Disaster Recovery Plan plays a role in fulfilling the responsibility of the university to ensure the safety of our employees and students, protection of state resources and assets, and preservation of the integrity of our vital functions and data. The information in the ITS Disaster Recovery Plan provides guidance and resources to return to a fully operational state following a disaster.

    2. The ITS Continuity of Operations Plan is periodically reviewed by ITS and is included in the ITS DRP. This plan’s primary purpose is to ensure ITS client services continue to be provided in the event of a disaster.
