Scope
Applies to all university faculty members and university departments placing orders for textbooks and course materials.
This policy governs all textbooks and related course materials that students are required to purchase for courses taught at UNCW.
Policy
General Statement:
The UNCW Bookstore is a self-supporting auxiliary enterprise of the university that exists solely to serve the campus community. It aims to provide the best, most convenient service to all UNCW students, faculty, and staff.
The bookstore plays an essential role in meeting the university's academic mission by supplying various books and supplies required for coursework. In addition, the bookstore contributes back to the university through various scholarships.
The UNCW Bookstore is committed to ensuring that all required textbooks and course materials are available to UNCW students promptly and conveniently. To accomplish this, the following guidelines were established.
Orders for Textbooks and Course Pack Materials:
Faculty members must place all orders with the UNCW Bookstore for textbooks and related course pack materials that students are required to purchase for courses taught at UNCW.
Orders not placed through the UNCW Bookstore are not compliant with HEOA. In addition, it can hinder students from placing textbook orders in advance to secure cost savings (such as savings with rentals or used books). Furthermore, it prohibits students who rely on financial aid (scholarships, loans, and grants), bookstore dollars, or military VA/VR benefits from receiving their textbooks and course materials through their related financial aid benefits.
The UNCW Bookstore will share this information publicly on its website, complying with the Higher Education Opportunities Act of 2008 (HEOA), specifically 20 U.S. Code § 1015b. This act mandates that institutions receiving federal financial aid publish a list of required and recommended course materials, including textbook information, for each course.
Timely Ordering:
For textbooks and course materials to be available in the appropriate quantity to students at the start of classes each term, the UNCW Bookstore must have all textbook orders by the published deadlines (see bookstore website).
Timely ordering also allows the UNCW Bookstore to place orders with wholesalers early, providing a cost savings to students.
Course Packs and Permissions:
Course packs through UNCW Printing Services:
The UNCW Print Shop may produce course packs. For details, please see 05.740 Printing Services policy.
Other course packs/materials:
The UNCW Bookstore will provide exclusive custom publishing services for institutional course packs (other than those offered by UNCW Printing Services). Such services will include developing course packs for faculty members, securing the appropriate copyright clearances, printing and binding course packs, and distributing and selling them in the UNCW Bookstore.
Procedure
Method for Placing Orders
Adoption and Insights Portal (AIP)
The Adoptions and Insights Portal (AIP) is the official source for researching, adopting, and sharing insights about textbooks and course materials.
It offers the benefits of a one-click re-adopt feature, research and adoption of course materials in one convenient location, and comparison of estimated student pricing and available formats before adoption.
AIP is integrated with UNCW’s Single Sign On (SSO) technology. You can conveniently access AIP from MySeaport, select the Faculty tab, and then on the right, about halfway down the page, under “Textbooks and Catalogues,” select “Order Textbooks (AIP).”
Email: Orders may also be emailed to the UNCW Bookstore at bookstore@uncw.edu.
Deadlines
Please ensure orders are placed by the appropriate deadlines (see bookstore website).
