Purpose
Explains university policies and graphics standards regarding the official university logos and colors.
Scope
Applies to all university departments and activities.
University logo policies apply to all visual communications that represent the university to a significant audience, either internally or externally. This includes, but is not limited to video productions, exhibit materials, signage for buildings and vehicles, Web sites, shirts and specialty items in addition to all printed and electronic publications emanating from the university.
Any visual materials paid for in part or wholly by university funds or public and private grants awarded to the university and funds given to the university through its foundation are included in this program.
Policy
The UNCW Visual Identity Program and Publications Guide, which was approved by the UNCW Cabinet in September 2002, is the official source for information concerning official university logos and colors. The guide may be accessed on the World Wide Web at
https://www.uncw.edu/news/guidelines/intro.html
A brief summary concerning university logos and colors is provided below.
University Logos.
The logos of the 2002 graphic identity program replace all previous versions of UNCW symbols. To obtain the most current camera-ready copies or digital files, contact UNCW Printing Services or download logos directly from the World Wide Web at
https://www.uncw.edu/printingservices/logos.htm.
The symbols of the UNCW logo system cannot be redrawn, reproportioned, modified or altered in any way. Logos should always be reproduced from high-resolution camera-ready copies or high-resolution digital files to maintain high quality. Their colors must be reproduced as close to those specified.
The UNCW "house" logo is the university's official identifier. It is copyrighted as the visual symbol to represent the university and must be incorporated prominently in ALL print and electronic publications emanating from UNCW. (The copyright symbol © must be included as part of the logo.)
The Seahawk logo is the official and only insignia of the UNC Wilmington athletic teams and is service marked. (The SM symbol must be included as part of the logo.) It can be used by other departments across campus for student-related, spirit-oriented programs and activities. It cannot be used in conjunction with academic departmental programs or academically sponsored, official class-related student activities.
Where to Get Official UNCW Logos
Digital files can be downloaded directly from the UNCW Printing Services Web site at https://www.uncw.edu/printingservices/logos.htm, or contact Printing Services designers directly at 962-4120 to obtain copies. All licensing requests for materials including university imagery should be directed to the director of campus services at 910-962-7351.
Under no circumstances may university logos be redrawn, rescanned, reproportioned or modified in any form. This includes stretching the logo to fit in a space, adding outlines to the image, changing colors or removing UNCW and replacing it with another image or type, etc.
Other Marks
Not an official university logo, the Seahawk caricature of the mascot was designed to provide flexibility in casual situations. While the mascot may be used in a variety of ways and attitudes, it must retain the distinctive design features - eyebrows, beak, athletic build - and appropriate school colors. All designs must be approved by the assistant to the chancellor for university relations.
The official seal of the University of North Carolina at Wilmington is not a part of the logo system and is not interchangeable with UNCW logos. The seal is used to authenticate official university documents and to communicate the significance of special occasions and events. Its use is reserved for more formal uses such as graduation programs, diplomas, annual reports and certificates, and also may be watermarked into official letterhead. The seal may be used on the pockets of blazers, on buttons, in formal bookstore applications and on recognition items. For further clarification on the use of UNCW seal, contact the assistant to the chancellor for university relations.
Logo Usage.
The "house" logo and the words "University of North Carolina at Wilmington" or "UNC Wilmington" must appear prominently on the front cover of all university publications as well as on posters and flyers.
Logos must be reproduced in the university's official PMS colors in approved combinations. However, when the ink color in a one-color publication is to be something other than one of the official colors, the logo may be reproduced in that color. This dispensation does not apply to stationery items.
The "house" and Seahawk logos may not be distorted or redrawn, repositioned or modified in any form. The position of the Seahawk must never be reversed or flopped; the beak must always face left.
Official naming scheme – UNCW divisions/schools/departments/programs should use the "house" or Seahawk logo with the name of the unit centered under the base or placed to the side. This usage represents the unit's official logo.
Programs –Programmatic differentiation may be achieved through illustrations accompanied by an official university mark. Programs funded by grants are considered university programs, and use of these program logos with the university logo must be approved by the assistant to the chancellor for university relations. These programs should always be identified with UNCW, by using either the university name or logo.
Stationery – All academic, administrative and support units of the university are required to use the approved letterhead styles on all stationery. Envelopes, business cards, mailing labels, fax cover sheets and other stationery items must also conform to these logo guidelines.
Web pages –When creating university-related Web pages, all standards for color and usage of logos in print apply. When UNCW logos are embedded in a larger piece of art (such as an image map), Web page designers should use the exact color matching on color palettes. (For more information see the UNCW Web Style Guide at https://www.uncw.edu/admin/style.html.) The gold burnished "house" logo can be used only on Web pages or PowerPoint presentations. Under no circumstances is it to be used in printed publications because the resolution is too low to reproduce properly.
Shirts –Official university shirts (for departments or major events), including golf shirts, are required to have the "house" or Seahawk logo embroidered in university colors and can include the name of the unit or program. Shirt colors should be in the neutral family (tan, khaki, black, gray, etc.) or one of the university's colors. Color combinations which are representative of other universities in the region (i.e. purple, red, pale blue) are not permitted. T-shirts for massive student giveaways (such as move-in, orientation or welcome week) should accurately reflect the university's colors and marks. Other student T-shirts should be in good taste and if possible reflect university colors and marks.
Merchandise –UNCW logo merchandise intended for sale must be approved by the director of campus services who addresses licensing, sponsorships, product endorsements and other related issues that arise in conjunction with external use of UNCW logos.
Vehicles –The UNCW logo is presented in one color on the university's service vehicles: PMS 329 (Seahawk green). The signs are to be ordered from Central Stores at 962-3180 and will be placed on vehicles by the motor pool.
Official University Colors.
The official colors of UNC Wilmington are the green of the ocean, the gold of the sand and the navy of the deep ocean. The exact colors are specified using the Pantone Matching System (PMS). Seahawk green (teal) is PMS 329. Seahawk gold (butter) is PMS 120. Navy accent is PMS 281. University colors should be matched to official PMS color chips. Colors on computer monitors or color copies may not be correct.
University Logos on Merchandise.
The Division of Business Affairs deals with licensing, sponsorships, product endorsements and other related issues that arise in conjunction with external use of various university marks, including the Seahawk logo, the"house" logo and seal. The university's licensing review authority is delegated by the associate vice chancellor for business affairs to the director of campus services.
UNCW logo merchandise to be sold either retail or wholesale must be licensed. Any vendor or individual interested in being licensed to sell or manufacture UNCW merchandise should contact Licensing Resource Group (LRG) of Holland, Mich., at 616-395-0676 or fax 616-395-2517. Online information can be obtained at https://www.trademarxonline.com. LRG will provide materials on how to become a licensed vendor to sell or manufacture UNCW merchandise.
If UNCW logo merchandise is to be sold strictly on campus or used internally by a group on campus, then it does not need to be licensed, but it must be registered with and approved by director of campus services, who shall obtain approvals on all designs for internal or on-campus use prior to being produced.
