Purpose
To set forth standards and procedures for authorizing, procuring, siting, and installing an engraved brick in the Fisher Memorial Garden to honor UNCW students, faculty and staff.
Policy
Eligibility. To be eligible to be memorialized by an engraved brick in the Fisher Memorial Garden, established in December 2009, the individual:
Must have been a current student, faculty or staff member as of the date on which the individual died. Registrar and Human Resource records will be referenced to demonstrate current university affiliation.
May be a contract employee with the university. A current university community member (student, faculty or staff) may make a request to include a contract employee in the Fisher Memorial Garden. This request will be considered by the committee and the appropriate contract manager.
Authority. The Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs or his or her designee will appoint a Fisher Memorial Garden Committee on an annual basis which is responsible to review all requests for bricks to be placed in the Fisher Memorial Garden and to consider requests for exceptions to this policy.
Procedure
Procurement. The procurement and installation of an approved brick will be coordinated by the office of Campus Life in cooperation with the Office of the Dean of Students, the Office of Human Resources and University Advancement.
Inscription. Each brick will include the name of the individual being honored, the years of life, and designation as a student, faculty and/or staff member of UNCW.
Placement. Placement will be in a random pattern rather than in any timeline order. A key will be made available at the Information Center in the Fisher Student Center should someone need assistance with finding a particular brick.
Timing
Installation. Engraved bricks will be installed once a year in conjunction with an annual university community memorial service to honor those who have passed away. This campus-wide memorial will be held in April to honor all those lost since the last memorial ceremony.
Visitation. Family and friends may choose to gather in this area at any point in time subject to reasonable time, place and manner restrictions. Reservations for any formal gatherings in this area should be made through the Campus Life Reservation and Event Services office to assure the best experience for those present.
Financing
Memorial Fund. A Memorial Fund will be established to which students, faculty, staff, friends and family may contribute. Funds will be used to cover the cost of engraving the individual bricks. The suggested minimum contribution toward each brick is set in consultation with the Advancement Division on an annual basis. No more than one brick per individual will be placed in the Fisher Memorial Garden.
Maintenance. Any funds collected in excess of the minimum contribution for an individual brick will be held in the fund to support maintenance of the garden and its surroundings. Expenditures from this fund will be reviewed and approved by the Memorial Garden Committee.
