Welcome

The School of Health and Applied Human Sciences (SHAHS) is one of three schools within the College of Health and Human Services (CHHS). The College is also home to the School of Nursing (SON) and the School of Social Work (SSW).

SHAHS is comprised of six separate undergraduate majors: Athletic Training; Exercise Science; Community Health Education; Physical Education and Health (K-12 Teacher Licensure); Recreation, Sport Leadership and Tourism Management; and Recreation Therapy in addition to an interdisciplinary minor in Gerontology. All programs share a commitment to improving health and health-related quality of life concerns for all ages across the lifespan. Our graduates work in hospitals, clinics, schools, nursing homes, resorts and the community.

The school is large and is expected to grow with this newfound status. Currently there are approximately 600 students within our majors. Full and part-time faculty number 58. We also have one master's degree in Gerontology, and we are the sole provider of PED 101, the required basic studies course, which annually enrolls approximately 3,000 students.

Although SHAHS is one of the largest academic units in the university, we take great pride in treating all of our students in the manner of a small department. Our faculty know students personally and go to great lengths to include students in ongoing research and community projects related to classes.

In SHAHS, students learn by doing. Most of our classes integrate classroom learning with practical experience and every major has an intense semester-long internship or practicum, some for a full 12 credit hours and working the equivalent of full-time in a field agency.
