Paving the Way to Eat Smart & Move More
OPI is partnering with the New Hanover County Health Dept. and City of Wilmington Transportation Division on this $17,750 Eat Smart Move More Community Grant project, which will provide a multi-use path along Colwell Ave. (see map below), bike to school promotions and bicycle safety education at Girls, Inc., Forest Hills Elementary School, and Vesta Village public housing campus (awarded for June 2010-June 2012). The multi-use path that will be completed along Colwell Avenue is a section of the River to Sea Bikeway (http://rivertoseabikeway.com/asbb.html). The Physical Activity and Nutrition Branch with the NC Dept. of Health & Human Services is partnering with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and East Carolina University to evaluate the effectiveness of each Eat Smart Move More Community Grant project. Approximately 100 youth between the ages of 9-14 years will be recruited to wear accelerometers to monitor their physical activity levels for 1 week over each of the next 3 years.
