Serve Logo

Serve: (verb), to assist somebody in a particular way, to have a particular effect

We want students to increase their awareness, identification, and understanding of community needs and comprehension of individuals' social responsibility for those needs, and we want students to pursue opportunities to serve others.

At UNCW we to focus on three ways to serve others while engaging in the community or on campus:

  • community service - volunteering in the community on your own (not as part of a course assignment)
  • service-learning - serving the community as part of a course requirement
  • philanthropy - raising money or collecting items for charitable organizations (not as part of a course assignment)

The Office of Student Leadership & Engagement offers UNCW students many opportunities to participate in community service projects and programs across campus and the Wilmington Community. These initiatives are provided in the form of Signature Service Events, Ongoing Projects, and through partnerships with local non-profit organizations. Our programs are planned and executed by the professional staff and Engagement Guides in the Office of Student Leadership and Engagement. We want to help UNCW students change the world!

Signature Service Events

Our Signature Service Events are annual projects led by the professional staff and Engagement Guides for the Office of Student Leadership & Engagement. These projects are held on campus over the course of the academic year. Students, groups, and organizations are encouraged to participate in these large-scale projects. The Halloween Carnival, Stop Hunger Now, and The Young at Heart Social are just a few examples of our community service events.

Ongoing Projects

Engagement Guides for the Office of Student Leadership & Engagement are responsible for the partnerships, planning, and volunteer recruitment for Ongoing Projects. In the past, our students have worked with local Boys & Girls Clubs, mentoring programs, and rebuilding projects.

Community Service Trips

Our office offers alternative Spring Break trips to students who are interested in participating in these Community Service Trips. UNCW students travel with members of the professional staff to areas of need for a week, increasing their reach to positively impact a national and global community. In the past, our student groups have worked with Women's and Children's Homes, shelters, and rebuilding projects. In Spring 2014, our student group had a life changing experience while working with The City of Refuge in Atlanta, Georgia. Community Service Trips are organized for each academic break period.
