Phishing for Account Information

Tuesday, March 03, 2015

Due to recent Phishing attacks on UNCW accounts, please be aware of any suspicious emails entering your Inbox. If you have any doubt as to the legitimacy of a recent email, remember that the Technology Assistance Center (TAC) will try to send a campus-wide email when alerted of a widespread Phishing scam.

Please remember also that ITS willnever ask for your username and password in an email. If you have any question as to whether it may actually be ITS trying to contact you via email, call the TAC at 910-962-4357.

If you receive a suspicious email, please do not click on any links within the email, and delete it from your Inbox. You may also want to add the sender to your "Blocked Senders" List. Directions on how to do so can be found on this "Technipages" site: http://www.technipages.com/outlook-block-email

If you happen to click on links within the suspicious email, go ahead and change your UNCW password. Details on changing your password can be found on our ITS site here. Also, be sure to run a scan with your antivirus software. This will ensure no further threats to your account.

For future reference, watch for the following information to help identify potential scams:

  • A generic greeting instead of the email being addressed specifically to you
  • Unknown or unfamiliar email addresses
  • Requests for confidential information
  • Numerous spelling errors or typos

Questions? Contact the TAC at 910-962-4357 or tac@uncw.edu.
