Karl Ricanek Jr., professor in the UNCW Department of Computer Science and director of the Institute for Interdisciplinary Identity Sciences (I3S), is a recipient of a 2025 Educators in Residence (EIR) grant from The Michelson Intellectual Property Institute (Michelson IP).
The EIR program supports educators in promoting IP literacy and prepares students to be successful in an innovation-driven economy. The grant will be used to integrate intellectual property education into curricula to teach students how to protect and leverage their work.
“My students inspired me to show them the path — how to transform their intellectual passions into intellectual property," said Ricanek. "Incorporating IP training into the undergraduate curriculum at UNCW empowers non-business students to protect, share and commercialize their innovations.”
The Michelson Institute for Intellectual Property is a non-profit initiative that provides access to IP education to support inventors and entrepreneurs. In 2020, Michelson IP launched the IP Educator in Residence Initiative to advance IP literacy efforts.
