BioTECH: Ages 16-17

Must have completed 10th grade and turn 16 by June 1st. Must not turn 18 before July 31st.

Prerequisits: Must have completed basic biology and chemistry, preferred microscopy experience

Calling all highly motivated high school students interested in modern biotech research.  Discover the world of marine biotechnologies at UNCW in this one week, lab intensive biotech program. Work in small groups to gain authentic hands-on experience conducting research in UNCW labs.  Learn the process of collecting environmental samples and purifying them for biotech research.  Develop a complete understanding of molecular techniques from DNA extraction to PCR reactions, sequencing, and the importance of bioinformatics.  Interact with UNCW faculty, researchers, and graduate students who are working in the biotechnology field.  Build your biotech tool kit with MarineQuest!

Highlights include:

  • Interact with UNCW scientists involved in biotechnology research; experiment in university labs; learn how to use field equipment for sampling; build a molecular tool kit including pipetting, microscopy techniques, cell isolation, slide preparation, DNA extraction and sequencing; practice reading and searching peer reviewed journals; research and present a prospective biotech research project

Residential students must arrive on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. while commuting students join the program Monday at 8:00 a.m.
