Basics

  • What is Office 365?

    Office 365 is a cloud-based group of services offered by Microsoft, hosted in data centers through the United States, including (but not limited to) enhanced functionality such as email, file storage, collaboration, video conferencing and Office downloads. Access it at https://mail.uncw.edu.

Email

  • What browsers should I use?

    To get the best out of Office 365 features, here are the recommended minimum browser versions:

    • At least Windows Internet Explorer 9
    • At least Mozilla Firefox 12
    • At least Apple Safari 5
    • At least Google Chrome 18
  • How do I set up my mobile device for email?

    Once your account has been migrated you will need to update your cell phone and/or tablet device settings to connect to your UNCW email account. To do so, delete your email account off your device and set it up again via instructions on the Microsoft site here.

  • Do I have to log into Outlook every time I start it?

    Once migrated to Office 365, when you open Microsoft Outlook it will ask you to log in. You have two options:

    • You can check the “Remember my Credentials” checkbox and only enter your credentials that one time (our recommendation).
    • OR you can choose to enter your UNCW email address and password each time you start Outlook.
    • NOTE: When you change your password (according to the 90-day schedule), the next time you open Outlook it will automatically prompt you to update the password.
  • How do I change my UNCW email password?
    • Go to http://www.uncw.edu
    • Click on the "Faculty & Staff" or the “Current Students” link at the top of the page.
    • In the top left corner of the Faculty/Staff or Student page, click the "Change Password" link under "Outlook Web Access (OWA)"
    • Follow the instructions found on this page.
    • NOTE: Passwords expire every 90 days.
  • How long can I keep my UNCW email account?

    Student Account Deletion:Student accounts will be deleted after the drop/add period the fall or spring semester following separation from UNCW. Separation is defined as graduation, transfer, leave of absence, etc. Students who have separated from the university are not able keep their "uncw.edu" email account.

    Faculty/Staff Account Deletion: Faculty and staff accounts will be deleted on the day of separation from UNCW. If a faculty or staff member is retiring, they are entitled to keep their email account unless they choose to not do so.

  • How do I access my Shared Mailbox (formerly MEPFs/Public Folders)?
  • How do I manage my SPAM filter settings?

    Once migrated to Office 365 you will have an integrate SPAM filter solution tied to your account. You can access any messages automatically marked as SPAM by opening your Junk Email folder. You can also modify SPAM filter settings by logging into OWA and selecting “Options” under the gear icon on the top right of your screen.

  • What is Cached Exchange Mode, and why should I use it?

    Over time, as your account maintains more and more email it will eventually begin to slow down your experience in Microsoft Outlook. Cached Exchange Mode is an optional setting in Outlook which can help speed Outlook back up by maintaining only the email you wish. Click here for more information on how to set up this option.

  • What is "Clutter"?

    Clutter helps you move low priority messages out of your Inbox so that you can easily scan for important messages. Clutter analyzes your emails, and based on your past behavior, determines the messages that you’re most likely to ignore. It then moves those messages to a folder called Clutter so that you can review them later. Click here for more information on how to enable or disable clutter.

  • How do I access someone else's calendar?

    If someone has chosen to share their calendar with you, you can access it by following the instructions found on this page.

Email Archiving

  • How do I archive my email in Office 365 (Windows)?

    Faculty and staff have the ability to archive email in the Office 365 archiving solution. There are several steps you need to take to utilize this solution and set up archiving policies for your email folders. We recommend you set up policies on folders that tend to hold a lot of data over time. Here's how:

    • Open Outlook.
    • Right-click the folder on which you wish to set up archiving and select "Properties."
    • Click on the "Policy" tab.
    • Under the "Online Archive" section, select the policy you wish to apply.
    • Click OK.
  • How do I archive my email in Office 365 (Macintosh)?

    Faculty and staff have the ability to archive email in the Office 365 archiving solution. There are several steps you need to take to utilize this solution and set up archiving policies for your email folders. We recommend you set up policies on folders that tend to hold a lot of data over time. Here's how:

    • Log into OWA.
    • Right-click the folder on which you wish to set up archiving and select "Assign Policy."
    • Select the policy you wish to apply.
    • Click OK.
  • How do I view my archived email?

    Outlook: Your archive will appear in the folder list on the left side of your Outlook program screen and will be titled "Online Archive - doej@uncw.edu".
    OWA: Your archive will appear in the folder list on the left side of your OWA screen and will be titled "In-Place Archive - Doe, John".
    NOTE: Though the folders have different titles, the archive is the same.

  • What about the TealEmail Archive?

    UNCW's TealEmail Archive maintains everything that was in your mailbox on December 17, 2010 until the date you were migrated to Office365. You can still access these messages by logging in here; however, they will not be migrated to Office 365.

  • What do I do with my PSTs?

    Once migrated to Office 365, any locally archived emails (stored in PSTs) are still accessible within your Outlook program just like they always have been. You can choose to upload your PSTs to Office 365 simply by dragging the emails contained therein up into your UNCW account (within Outlook).
    NOTE: We recommend only migrating up to 250 emails at once in order to give your computer time to sync those messages to Office365.

OneDrive for Business

  • What kinds of files should I store on OneDrive for Business?
    • Store work-related documents on OneDrive for Business (*.docx, *.xlsx, *.pptx, etc.)
    • Store documents that only you or UNCW-specific people need to access.
    • NOTE: We recommend you check your files on a periodic basis and remove files you no longer need.
  • How can I access my files and upload additional files in OneDrive for Business?

    OneDrive for Business can be accessed in the following ways:

    • Via a Web browser: You can access your entire OneDrive for Business folder system by logging into Office365, clicking the App Iconicon in the top left and selecting OneDrive.
    • Via the Microsoft Office OneDrive for Business program: When you install Office 2013 on your computer, you will have a new application called "OneDrive for Business 2013." This program allows you to access OneDrive for business via an icon in your taskbar (Cloud Icon). Double-clicking this icon provides you with a folder-style view into OneDrive for Business. You can open documents directly within this folder, edit them and drag new documents into the folder for automatic upload.
    • Via mobile devices: All major mobile device operating systems provide a Microsoft OneDrive "app" which you can download for free. Once installed you can connect it to your UNCW email account and gain "Read access" into your entire OneDrive for Business system.
  • How do I use the OneDrive for Business app on my Mac?

    In order to set up the OneDrive for Business app on my Macintosh-compatible machine, follow the instructions found on this page. If you have any questions please contact the Technology Assistance Center at 962-4357.

Skype for Business

  • How do I install Skype for Business?

    Personal machines: Skype for Business can be installed on personal (non UNCW-owned) computers by downloading Office 2013 via Office365. Log into OWA and click the "Office 365" link on the top left of the screen. Next, click "Install Office on more devices" and follow the steps. Skype is part of Office 2013.

    NOTE on Skype for UNCW machines: Once you have an Office 365 account, you will also have Skype available to you via Office 2013. If you don't have Office 2013 on your UNCW computer and would like to acquire it, please download it via the Software Center:

    • Log onto your UNCW-owned computer with your UNCW email credentials. Please note that laptops must be on the UNCW wireless network (Hawkwifi) in order for this to work.
    • Open your START menu and select: All Programs > Microsoft Systems Center 2012 > Configuration Manager > Software Center.
    • Once the Software Center loads, select "Office 2013 - Install Office 2013" from the available options. Then click "INSTALL SELECTED" in the bottom right of the screen.
    • When finished installing (it will prompt you), we recommend restarting your computer. You will now have the newest version of Microsoft Office, and your previous version will be gone.
  • Who can I contact via Skype for Business?

    Skype for Business currently allows you to connect with any UNCW faculty, staff or student.

  • I already have a Skype account for personal use. How does that integrate with Skype for Business?

    Your personal/non-UNCW Skype account is completely separate from your UNCW Skype for Business account.

Microsoft Office

  • How do I install Office?

    For personal (non-UNCW) computers: Log into OWA and click the "Office 365" link on the top left of the screen. Click "Install Office on more devices" and follow the steps.

  • Should I install one of my 5 copies of Office on my UNCW-owned computer?

    No. UNCW provides separate licenses for UNCW-owned machines which do not subtract from the 5 copies you are permitted to install on personal machines.

  • How do I reclaim one of my 5 copies of Office from a computer I no longer want to use it on?

    If you have installed one of your 5 copies of Office on a personal machine and wish to deactivate that computer, do the following:

    • Log into OWA.
    • Click "Office 365" in the top left corner of the screen.
    • Click "Install" under the "Install Office on more devices" section.
    • Click "Deactivate" next to the computer you no longer wish to have licensed.
  • What are the Office Web Apps?

    In addition to your 5 installed copies of Microsoft Office, you can also choose to take advantage of Office Web Apps. These apps allow you to utilize Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote, all directly within a Web browser without the need to install anything. To take advantage of this capability do the following:

    • Log into OWA
    • Click theApp Icon icon in the top left.
    • Select the Office Web App you wish to utilize.

    NOTE: All files created in an Office Web App are saved automatically within your OneDrive for Business.

  • Should I still use Microsoft Office on Tealware?

    Currently, Microsoft Office on TealWare is still available for your use. However, it will be decommissioned over the next year, so we recommend you make the switch to the Office Web Apps (or download the complete version of Office).

  • What happens to my Office when I graduate/retire/quit?

    Upon graduation / retirement / termination, any copies of Office you have installed on personal machines will continue to function for up to 30 days. After this period of time, Office will no longer allow you to create new documents and will repeatedly remind you it is unlicensed.
