Chair's Greetings

Hello and welcome to the website for the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. As these pages demonstrate, we have an exciting, student oriented program that awards Bachelor of Arts( BA), Bachelor of Science (BS, ACS Certified) and Master of Science (MS) degrees. A significant portion of the training takes place in our laboratories, both those associated with courses, and those involving research in Marine and Atmospheric Science, Biochemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Computational Chemistry and Chemical Education. Thus, in addition to rigorous courses in all aspects of chemistry, most of our students carry out research under the direct supervision of faculty, with significant numbers (23 in 2007-2008 alone) appearing as coauthors on peer-reviewed publications. This student oriented focus has no doubt contributed to our success in attracting chemistry majors. With the exception of UNC Chapel Hill and NC State University, UNCW had the largest number of chemistry majors in North Carolina in the 2005-2006 academic year (the last one for which these data were reported), graduating forty seven (24 BA, 24 BS and 14 MS), and these numbers continue to increase. In the 2007-2008 academic year, we graduated a record seventy seven students (20 BA, 45 BS, 12 MS).
