Students change their major an average of 3 times before graduation.
Choosing a major doesn’t limit you to one career. Most majors give you the education that can enable you to enter a variety of careers. Here are the most effective steps in choosing a major/career:
Step 1: Career Assessments
Before taking a career assessment, meet with your Career Counselor to determine which assessments are right for you.- Kuder Journey
- Log in to SeaWork and then click “Career Center Events” and search for “Kuder Journey”, then select “Register for Event”
- After taking all three assessments, explore the suggested careers and make a note of any that stand out.
- Jung Typology Test (MBTI)
- After taking assessment, write down the 4 letters (and percentages). Discuss your preferences with your career counselor..
Step 2: Gather Career Information

Step 3: Discuss Your Options
- Talk to professionals in your field, UNCW Alumni, faculty, advisors, and current students to get the inside scoop. Learn how to network… from the initial contact to what questions to ask here
