UNCW is one of only 18 universities in the country and is the first
and only university in North Carolina to receive a StormReady desigantion. The StormReady program was developed by the National Weather Service to help communities develop plans to handle all types of severe weather. The program uses emergency management guidelines to help improve hazardous weather operations within a community. It involves a proactive approach to readiness and incorporates requirements in the categories of communications and coordination, National Weather Service warning reception, hydrometeorolgical monitoring, warning dissemination, community preparedness, and administrative matters. According to the National Weather Service: “StormReady communities are better prepared to save lives from the onslaught of severe weather through better planning, education, and awareness. No community is storm proof, but StormReady can help communities save lives.”
