Lectures and Readings

Buckner Lecture Series

Co-sponsored by the Department of English and the Creative Writing Department and endowed by Charles F. Green, III (’71), the Buckner Lecture Series brings distinguished presenters to campus in honor of Green’s friend, Katherine K. Buckner. These readings are free and open to the public and accommodations for disabilities may be made by calling (910) 962-3500 three days prior to the event.

For further information, please contact the UNCW Department of English at (910) 962-3320 or the Creative Writing Department at (910) 962-7063.

Leadership Lecture Series

The Leadership Lecture Series serves as a forum for intellectual inquiry and discussion offering the campus and community opportunities to discuss and explore the political, cultural and economic trends and issues that shape and affect our communities today. By inviting a speaker to the campus, the university does not endorse any particular position. Expect to be enlightened, challenged and inspired. Lectures are held on Mondays at 7 pm in Kenan Auditorium.

One Book, One Community

In partnership with UNCW Randall Library, New Hanover County Public Library, the Community College Learning Resource center, and the New Hanover High School Lyceum Academy, this program is designed to celebrate literacy and the unique and enriching experience of one book being read by our entire community. Once a year, everyone reads the same book, and then during the months of January and February, the public is invited to attend various events and readings to discuss the book and various perspectives.

For more information about the program, contact Randall Library at (910) 962-4234.

Readers Series

Throughout the year, the Department of Creative Writing offers an active series of readings by prominent writers, some of whom also teach graduate workshop courses for the department and give their readings as part of their visit to UNCW. Other writers may come in only to give a reading. Graduate students and faculty also give readings throughout the year.

Writer’s Week Symposium

The Department of Creative Writing hosts the Writers' Week Symposium for one week in the spring semester. Activities include workshops, panels, readings and manuscript conferences. Writers' Week brings together graduate students, undergraduate students, and community members interested in the art of writing to promote the discussion of craft. Each year six or seven writers are invited to give readings and also to teach literary craft seminars, serve on panels, and meet individually with students about the students’ writing. In 2006 the keynote writer was Jonathan Franzen, the writer who declined to be on Oprah’s Book Club. Writers' Week 2007 featured acclaimed author Susan Orlean, and in 2008, Creative Writing will present Pulitzer Prize winner Yusef Komunyakaa.
