Transfer Guides are designed to help students at a North Carolina Community College identify pathways and specific NC community college courses that lead to associate degree completion, major preparation, and finally to baccalaureate completion. To prepare for a streamlined transfer, review the Transfer Guides below with an academic advisor at your community college and connect with your Transfer Success Coach if you have any questions.

Please note: Completion of a transferable degree does not guarantee admission to the University or that the Bachelor's degree will be completed in two years after transferring. Students transferring from a four-year institution or an out-of-state institution can use the Transfer Equivalency Self-Service tool to create an unofficial degree plan to determine how their credit will transfer and any requirements remaining at UNCW.

What are Transfer Guides?

As part of the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement, UNC System Universities are required to create a Transfer Guide for every major. Transfer Guides are designed to help students at a North Carolina Community College identify pathways and specific courses that lead to associate degree completion, major preparation, and finally to baccalaureate completion. To prepare for a seamless transfer, review the Transfer Guides below with an academic advisor at your community college and your Transfer Success Coach.

Does completing my AA or AS waive UNCW's General Education requirements for me?

North Carolina Community College transfer students, who have earned an AA or AS degree meeting the requirements of the North Carolina Comprehensive Articulation Agreement (CAA) or an AE, AFA, AATP or ASTP will receive a waiver of Foundations and Approaches & Perspectives requirements with the exception of PE; foreign language; and 3 credits from Living in Our Diverse Nation or Living in a Global Society. They will also receive a waiver of 3 credits each of Writing Intensive, Information Literacy and Critical Reasoning competency requirements. AA, AS, AE, AFA, AATP or ASTP degree-holding transfer students will be held to all other University Studies requirements.

Who Can Help With Advising Questions?

Prior to being admitted to UNCW, North Carolina Community College students are encouraged to work with their Transfer Success Coach for assistance with choosing appropriate coursework to transfer toward their degree plan at UNCW. After admission, your official transfer credit evaluation and UNCW degree audit will be prepared. Your UNCW academic advisor will meet with you as part of your new student orientation process.

What if I am completing an Associate in Applied Science?

Transfer Guides are only designed for transferable Associate degree programs like the AA, AS, AFA, AATP or ASTP. If you are completing an Associate in Applied Science, we encourage you to review our Uniform Articulation Agreements or individual articulation agreements found on the Transfer Partnerships website.

What if I plan to transfer without an Associate’s degree?

While we encourage students to complete their Associate's degree prior to transferring, it is possible to transfer earlier if you meet the transfer admission requirements. Transfer Guides can still be used to assist with choosing transferable coursework, but it is important to note you will not qualify for the University Studies waiver if you do not complete an AA or AS degree.

Guaranteed Admission Program

UNCW's PathWays program offers guaranteed admission for students transferring from a partner North Carolina Community College. Completing a transferable Associate's degree ensures seamless access to UNCW, ensuring a smooth transition for your academic journey.

Who is eligible for PathWays?
Students who are currently attending a partner community college and pursuing a transferable Associate's degree are eligible to join PathWays. Transferable Associate's degrees include:

Associate in Arts (AA)
Associate in Science (AS)
Associate in Engineering (AE)
Associate in Arts in Teacher Preparation (AATP)
Associate in Science in Teacher Preparation (ASTP)
Associate in Fine Arts (AFA)

Only students who are planning to apply as a transfer student are eligible for guaranteed admission. Dual-enrolled or early college students who plan to apply as first-year students are not eligible for PathWays. To learn more, please visit our Early College website.

What are the benefits of PathWays?

Guaranteed admission as a transfer student and $80 application fee waiver
$2,000 one-time scholarship for eligible students (only available for fall entry; students must apply by March 1 to be eligible)
A UNCW transfer success coach to offer personalized support, guide you through the process and provide updates on deadlines, opportunities and more
Access to campus visits, events and workshops to prepare for the transfer process and ensure a smooth transition

How can I join PathWays?
Enroll by completing the PathWays form - available year-round. While there's no deadline, joining in your first year at a partner community college ensures maximum benefits.
