Creative Writing Alumni Authors to Read from Their Debut Books at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, September 16

SEPTEMBER 14, 2021

WILMINGTON, N.C.—UNCW alumni Bill Carty (MFA ’07), Nicola DeRobertis-Theye (MFA ’14), A.J. Gnuse (MFA ’19), and E.J. Schwartz (MFA ’21) will give a virtual reading, followed by a Q&A, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, September 16, 2021.

Bill Carty is the author of Huge Cloudy (Octopus Books, 2019), which was long-listed for The Believer Book Award. He is Senior Editor at Poetry Northwest. He teaches at Hugo House, the UW Robinson Center for Young Scholars, and Edmonds College.

Nicola DeRobertis-Theye is the author of The Vietri Project (HarperCollins, 2021). She also was an Emerging Writing Fellow at the New York Center for Fiction, and her work has been published in Agni, Electric Literature, and LitHub. A graduate of UC Berkeley, she received an MFA in Creative Nonfiction from UNCW, where she was the fiction editor of its literary magazine, Ecotone. She is a native of Oakland, California and lives in Brooklyn, New York.

A.J. Gnuse is the author of Girl in the Walls (4th Estate and Ecco, 2021). His writing has appeared in the Guardian, Gulf Coast, Literary Hub, and other venues. A native of New Orleans, he lives in Texas.

E.J. Schwartz was born and raised in Scotch Plains, New Jersey. Before We Were Blue, her debut Young Adult novel, pitched as Netflix's Cheer meets Girl, Interrupted was released September 14th, 2021. Her writing has appeared in the New York Times, Barrelhouse, Necessary Fiction, and elsewhere. She graduated from UNCW's MFA program in 2021, and now lives in Richmond, Virginia, with her partner (whom she met in the MFA) and their sweet cat Chloe.
