New Associate Director of University College

March 3Dianna Washington, Ph.D., 2021 - Undergraduate Studies welcomes Dr. Dianna Washington as the new Associate Director of University College. She relocated to North Carolina from Indianapolis, Indiana. Dr. Washington earned her BA in Psychology from Harding University, MBA and MA in Community Counseling from Indiana Wesleyan University, M.S.Ed. in Learning Sciences Educational Psychology from Indiana University Bloomington, and Ph.D. in Urban Education Studies from Indiana University Indianapolis.

Dr. Washington is a student-focused education administrator with over 15 years of progressive experience in designing, implementing, and assessing comprehensive programs and services that support students’ development and academic progression. She is committed to advocating for equitable educational opportunities and a wonderful addition to our team. 


UKeryn Vickers, Interim Director, UCC's Keryn Vickers Nominated for Staff Excellence Award

February 01,2021 - Undergraduate  Studies and University College congratulate our very own Keryn Vickers, Interim Coordinator for his nomination for the UNCW 2020 Staff Excellence Award.  Keryn was among the few selected from UNCW's overall pool and also among the few nominated for the NC Governor's Award.

Winebrake as new Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs effective July 1, 2020 and extends its gratitude to Dr. Marilyn Sheerer for her years of service in that role, wishing her only the very best as she returns to teaching as a member of UNCW's Watson College of Education faculty.  

An award-winning educator and experienced administrator, Winebrake has served as Dean of the College of Liberal Arts at the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, N.Y., since 2011.  ...more...


New University College Director

Dr. Christine PesetskiMarch 11, 2020Undergraduate Studies is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Christine Pesetski as the new Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Studies and Director of University College.  Dr. Pesetski obtained her Ph.D. in Educational Research and Policy Analysis at North Carolina State University, and her Masters in Education specializing in College Counseling and Student Affairs at the University of Delaware. 

Dr. Pesetski joined UNCW in November 2018 as Associate Director of University College.  She has served very ably over the past academic year as the Interim Director, and UNCW is fortunate that, after she excelled in a national search, she has accepted the role on a permanent basis and added Assistant Dean duties in Undergraduate Studies to her portfolio.

Dr. Pesetski will oversee the critical advising and mentoring responsibilities for all incoming first-year undergraduate students and for many UNCW transfer students.  She will also take a leading role in advancing undergraduate student success more broadly at UNCW and supporting Undergraduate Studies as it looks to strengthen and coordinate advising practices across campus, manage curricular change, and support the advising and development of high impact practices in teaching and learning.

Associate Vice Chancellor and Dean of Undergraduate Studies Paul Townend notes that “Christine thrives on new challenges and opportunities and is dedicated to supporting the University College staff and the students they work with.  She has shown great dedication and energy in her interim role and is more than ready to lead University College and UNCW in strengthening our partnerships across this campus in ways that will make a difference for students.” 

Dr. Pesetski is “very excited to lead University College and university wide undergraduate persistence and retention initiatives here at UNCW. My colleagues within University College are smart, strategic, and creative in their approach to our work and I am confident that together we can continue to support undergraduate student success. This role brings together some of the most important aspects of undergraduate life and I am thrilled to be leading this unit.”

Starfish Student Success Manager

Congratulations Melissa Friddle, new Starfish Student Success Manager

Melissa FriddleUNCW and Undergraduate Studies is happy to announce the appointment of Melissa Friddle to the position of Starfish system manager.  Melissa comes to her new role after joining UNCW in 2012, initially serving in the Office of the Registrar.  She helped develop processes for the OAP (Online Accelerated Programs) for two years prior to transitioning to University College in 2016.  She has been an Academic Advisor for the last three years and managed the advising and registration portion of Freshman Orientation.  She earned an undergraduate degree in Music from Winthrop University and a Masters of Business Administration from Appalachian State University.  Her diverse experiences positions her well to support students, faculty and staff in this newly-created role. 

As Starfish manager, Melissa will work closely with UNCW advisors, staff, and faculty across campus to encourage adoption and thoughtful use of the system, which promises to make it much easier for students and those who work directly with them to share information, connect to crucial campus resources, and communicate around courses, advising, tutoring, housing, financial aid, the library, and other vital student services.  Melissa will also collaborate with academic and student affairs leadership in developing strategies for student success that take advantage of Starfish’s capacity to improve outreach and communication across campus.

New Director of University Studies

Congratulations Dr. Donald Bushman, new Director of University Studies; many thanks to Dr. Beverley McGuire.

Dr. Donald BushmanThe Dean of Undergraduate Studies and University Studies is pleased to announce that Dr. Donald Bushman, associate professor in the Department of English, has been appointed director of University Studies, effective at the start of the Fall 2019 semester.  Dr. Beverley McGuire will remain in this role through the summer and will support Dr Bushman’s transition.  We hope you all will join us in thanking her for her three years of service as she transitions back to full time faculty status. 

As director of University Studies, Dr. Bushman will work with the Faculty Senate and the University Studies Advisory Committee, UNCW’s colleges and schools, University College, the Center for Teaching Excellence, and other campus constituents to help administer the University Studies program and strengthen that curriculum.  He will also serve as an advocate and source of information for University Studies, represent University Studies in appropriate venues, and facilitate coordination among the University Studies' Explorations Beyond the Classroom component and the work of the Office of Applied Learning.  In addition, he will work with the General Education Assessment Coordinator and others in the assessment and strategic improvement of University Studies.  The director is also responsible for the review of relevant student petitions and requests for waivers.  He will also collaborate with the Dean of Undergraduate Studies on efforts to enhance and promote undergraduate education at UNCW.

Dr. Bushman earned a Ph.D. in English, with a specialization in rhetoric and composition, from the University of Tennessee.  Prior to his appointment at UNCW, he was a member of the University of Arizona’s University Composition Board, the unit of the English Department that oversees their writing-across-the-curriculum program.  At UNCW he has served as both composition coordinator and Chair in the English Department.  He regularly teaches first-year composition classes, as well as upper-level classes on such topics as argument, style analysis, and the history of rhetoric.  He is excited to assume his responsibilities and contribute to the strengthening of UNCW’s undergraduate liberal arts experience.

New Honors College Associate Director

Congratulations Dr. Eva Mehl, new Associate Director of Honors.

TheDr. Eva Mehl Dean of Undergraduate Studies and The Honors College is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Eva Mehl as the new Associate Director of Honors. Dr. Mehl is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of History and has been at UNCW since 2011. She holds two PhDs, one in Latin American history from University of California Davis, and another in European History from the University of Alicante (Spain). She received her M.A. in History from Universidad International de Andalucia. ... more

New General Education Assessment Coordinator

Lea BullardCongratulations to Lea Bullard, new Coordinator of General Education Assessment.  Undergraduate Studies is happy to announce that Lea has accepted a new position collaborating with the University Studies Director and the University Studies Advisory Committee in keeping UNCW’s assessment of University Studies robust and effective.

Lea is a homegrown Seahawk, born in Wilmington and receiving a bachelor’s degree in Biology and a Master’s of Arts in Teaching degree from UNCW. Lea returned to UNCW in September 2010 as a research assistant for General Education Assessment. Prior to that, she was a research assistant at the University of Michigan where she earned a master’s degree in Educational Assessment and Measurement. She has more than 10 years of experience in higher education as both an educator and researcher.
