UNCW Achieves Silver in Worldwide Sustainability Ranking SystemAASHE STARS

Completing the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS) has been a long-term goal for UNCW Sustainability. The metrics in this rating system will be used as a benchmarking tool and serve as a platform to recognize our current strengths in sustainability, as well as areas that can be improved.

Receiving a silver ranking in STARS is a victory that is shared by the entire university. Each and every student, faculty and staff member has an impact on the STARS report. It is only with cooperation and support from the whole community that UNCW was able to attain this recognition.

We would like to thank everyone for the actions you take everyday to ensure that we are preserving the environment and culture we enjoy today for future generations.

Sierra Club Recognizes UNCW as One of the Nations "Coolest Schools"sieeraclubcoolschool

UNCW was listed as one of Sierra Magazine Cool Schools for 2016 and 2017. This recognition was attributed to our AASHE STARS score as of March 22, 2016 with categories including Energy, Investments, Food, Innovation, Academics, Planning, Purchasing, Transport, Waste and Water.

"Our scoring key is a reflection of the broader priorities of the Sierra Club. For example, we award a significant percentage of points in the areas of campus energy use, transportation, and fossil fuel divestment because the Sierra Club believes that progress in these sectors is essential for addressing the climate crisis. While our ranking is fair, transparent, and accurate, we make no claim that it is the ultimate arbiter of campus sustainability."

Princeton Review Ranks UNCW as a Green Universityprincetonreview

Princeton Review listed UNCW as one of the Green Universities for 2016 and 2017. This was based on the AASHE STARS score as well.

"We ranked the Top 50 Green Colleges, plus reported sustainability information from over 300 more schools. From solar-powered dorms to clean energy career prep, find out all the different ways campus life is going green.

When ranking our Top 50 Green Colleges, we factored in the school's Green Rating. We tally our Green Rating scores based on institutional data we obtain from school administrators. Our 10 survey questions cover these key factors:

  • whether students have a quality of life on campus that is both healthy and sustainable
  • how well a school is preparing students for employment in an increasingly green economy
  • how environmentally responsible a school's policies are"
