Sponsored Programs & Research Compliance

Receiving the Award

The lead principal investigator is the primary individual in charge of and accountable for activities on a research project. Particularly those funded by a grant, cooperative agreement, training or public service project, contract or other sponsored mechanism. This responsibility includes financial management of activities such as salaries, travel, supplies, purchased services, contracted services, and tuition.

Although the principal investigator is paramount to a sponsored program's success, the university is ultimately the recipient of the award. In accepting an award the university assumes legal responsibility for observing the terms & conditions as well as delivering compliance assurance.

New Grant Fund Setup

Once the new award is received by UNCW, the fully executed agreement is electronically routed through the offices in the flowchart below. This process typically takes 10 business days, and, when completed, an email notification with your new grant fund number is sent to both the principal investigator and grant officer.

As the principal investigator you should review the terms & conditions of the award and to determine how to plan for scope, time, cost, quality, human resource, communications, risk, procurement, and stakeholder management.
